Nine Recent Studies on Vitamins, Fruits+Veggies, Ketogenic Dieting for Endurance Athletes, Blood Pressure, Cognitive Function, Depression & Gene-Diet-Interactions from 10/17

Looking for the very latest on nutrition science? Look no further: most of the results presented in this installment of the short news have not yet been officially published after their presentation on a conference of the Nutrition Society . I hope you don't mind that I decided to pool the most interesting of the latest studies from the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society in a single article. With the articles on vitamin D, B-vitamins, ketogenic diets in endurance athletes, and so on and so forth all being addressed individually, you can still skip studies you may not be interested in and get the gist (read the title and  the last paragraph of each bullet point) within seconds. As it is usually the case for short-news that are based on presentations at a conference, it will take time for the full papers to be written, reviewed and published. Accordingly, I cannot tell you how many eggs the subjects in the keto-diet study ate and whether they consumed their stakes rare or we...

Persistent Fat Loss Involves Diet, Exercise and ... Effective Tryptophan Management!? Here's What You Need to Know

Image
Cod is one of the foods w/ the highest tryptophan content and a staple in The Rock's  get in shape diet - along w/. You may remember that I have repeatedly written about the role of tryptophan (TRP) in weight loss: both on www.suppversity.com and (and even more often) in the SuppVersity Facebook News . Against that background you should not be totally surprised to hear that recent studies link a disturbed metabolism of TRP in overweight subjects to an increased susceptibility for mood disturbances and carbohydrate craving that will make them fall of the dieting wagon or, as Strasser and Fuchs write in a recent review "increasing the cessation probability of weight reduction programs" (Strasser. 2016). If you have ever tried to lose weight by eating less and exercising more, you will know that this common, but often unsuccessful "obesity solution" can trigger significant mood disturbances (ranging from the literal bad mood to depression) - so significant i...

L-Tryptophan is Reduced While Dieting - Does This Make the Essential Amino Acid a Key to Successful Weight Loss?

Trp and it's metabolite 5-HTP may be particularly useful for female sugar cravings and binges. Can l-tryptophan help you lose body fat? If you look at the results of the latest study from the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology it would seem that the answer to this question may be "Possibly, yes, but..." Before we come to the implications I would yet like to take a closer look at said study which shows that a lack of tryptophan (Trp) during diets does not just affect the biosynthesis of serotonin, but may also be associated with increased susceptibility for mood disturbances and carbohydrate craving. Accordingly, "strategies to supplement Trp while dieting could be highly useful in treating uncontrolled weight gain or in preventing neuropsychiatric symptoms" (Strasser. 2014). Honestly, fasting and eating / skipping breakfast may be more promising weight loss tools Breakfast and Circadian Rhythm Does Meal Timing Mat...

Removal of Amalgam Fillings Associated With Reductions in Memory Loss, Fatigue, Anxiety, Confusion & Other Health Problems, Observational Study from Canada Shows

Amalgam removed = health restored? While there is little doubt that mercury vapor poses a known health risk, there is neither a clearly established safe level of exposure, nor evidence that similar ill health effects can occur with chronic low grade exposure to mercury vapor from dental amalgam fillings. As you may know amalgam is not 100% but "only" 50% mercury, but is that enough to represent a significant health risk? The objective of a recent study from the University of Calgary was "to determine if mercury exposure from amalgam fillings is associated with risk of adverse health effects" (Zwicker. 2014). Mercury is among the reasons fish should not be your exclusive protein source Salmon Better Than Whey? Cod protein for recovery Krill = Super Protein?
