Hair Loss: Nutrient Deficiencies, Supps, Herbal Shampoo Ingredients, and Egg Yolk Hair Masks for Alopecia | Plus: Carcinogens & Endocrine Disruptors in Your Shampoos

While women will (comparatively) rarely go completely bald, they have the same problems with thinning hair as men do... and diet (from nutrient deficiency to excess - esp. vitamin A + D) are primary drivers of hair loss in both, men and women; and that despite the fact that deficiencies of both retinol and 25OHD contribute to hair loss, too ( Rushton 2002 ; Guo 2017 ). I've written extensively about "conventional alternative" treatments (alternative = avoiding 5-AR inhibitors that block the conversion to DHT and not paying for a transplant) roughly a year ago in "Hair Loss: Finasteride, Laser Light or Minoxidil - What Will Really Help Men & Women Regrow Lost Scalp Hair?" ( re-read it ). In view of the fact that this is still one of the more popular articles and considering the interest many of you showed in a recent Facebook post of mine that included the list of nutrient deficiencies, ailments, and behaviors that may cause hair loss ( Table 1 ) on F...

Hair Loss: Finasteride, Laser Light or Minoxidil - What Will Really Help Men & Women Regrow Lost Scalp Hair?

Image
Men may be at a higher risk, but androge-netic hair loss is not a male exclusive. Minoxidil, Finasteride, and low-level laser light therapy are Food and Drug Administration-approved/-cleared treatments for androgenetic alopecia, but do they actually work? That was one of the questions Areej Adil and Marshall Godwin tried to answer in a recent review; a systematic review and meta-analysis the scientists from the  Memorial University of Newfoundland  published in the Journal of the American Acadamy of Dermatology very recently and a paper of which its authors claim that I will clear up the confusion about the seemingly conflicting results of individual studies. Hair Mineral Analysis: Significant Correlations Between Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium & Sodium and Met. Syn., Insulin Resistance, Waist, BP etc. - Implications?

Image
Does her hair hold the secret to her fitness body? Actually that's unlikely, but it appears possible that a hair analysis could reveals what's keeping you back from a similarly amazing physique. Hair mineral analyses have been discredited by certain snake oil vendors who use them to sell their "oils" in form of an endless list of "essential" supplements you'd have to take if you don't want to end up as dead as the hair they used to produce the analysis. Still, they share one big strength with the more expensive RBC or other cell tests: They give you an idea of your actual calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium balance. Much in contrast to serum levels, by the way. If those are off, it's either due to an acute event (like diarrhea, for example ;-) or you have a real reason to be concerned. There is after all a really good reason these minerals are also called "electrolytes": They are heavily involved in the ion and thus charge-e...

It's never too early for your first push-up ;-) "10" is this week's SuppVersity figure of the week. Ten as in "ten push-ups" which is the mean number of push-ups the 12 year-old boys and girls from the Coe study you can read about in one of the items of today's news mash-up aka " On Short Notice ". I am honestly not yet sure what to make of it, it's not as bad as what I had expected based on a couple of observations I have made as of late, but it still goes to show you that you cannot take the most fundamental feats of physical fitness for granted, when it comes to pre-/peri-pubertal kids in today's sedentary society. Now, while I am still trying to make up my mind I would suggest we take a look at the actual outcomes of the study. The 10 push-ups were after all only part of the subject characteristics and not the reason Coe et al. actually conducted their study. Fit Kids are smart kids - Strength and cardio both matter!
