Science Round-Up Seconds: Optimal Health & Fitness Best Promoted W/ Intense Exercise. News on PUFAs & Thyroid Metabolism. Manganese the Anti-Sugar Glue Mineral!?

Image
There may be a hitherto overlooked "enzymatic connection" between low thyroid function (spec. "low T3 syndrome" or starvation-/overtraining-induced reductions in thyroid levels) and "insufficient" levels of the long-chain varieties of both , omega-3 (EPA, DHA), as well as omega-6 (GLA, ARA) fatty acids. I must admit that Carl & I did much to my own surprise cover more ground than I thought we would - and that despite his lengthy rant about the FDA ;-) That said, there is still enough for a second serving, aka the " Seconds " , featuring news like: The optimal exercise for health and fitness is intense - SuppVersity readers & Superhuman Radio listeners knew it all along, the comfort zone won't enforce adaptation PUFAs and the thyroid - insufficient conversion of LA and ALA with low T3 levels; probably also relevant everyone who enjoys starvation and overtraining Manganese an anti-sugar glue mineral - study shows manganese p...

On Short Notice: PWO EAA Supps for Young & Old, Indoor Pools & Low Testosterone, Life-Savingly Low T3/rT3 Ratios, Copper-Zinc-Manganese, Lifting for Prostate Health +More

Image 1: It's neither just as much, nor just as serious, but I would still venture the guess that it will take you more than 30s to digest today's installment of " On Short Notice " - despite the fact that the new format has no lengthy "short news", anymore ;-) For this installment of " On Short Notice " I have decided to go a somewhat different route than before: Originally, the first post you would have read after this short introduction would have dealt with the potential negative health effects of homogenized milk . What was intended as a "on short notice" item, did however become lengthier and lengthier, until it finally turned into an "almost full-length post" (a slightly extended version of this article is going to be published on Monday). This "incident" made me revisit the last installments of this series only to realize that the majority of the supposedly "short" On Short News items had be...

Are Camels the Better Cows? Cancer, Heart Disease, High LDL and Triglycerides, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Allergies, Viral and Bacterial Infections and Trace Mineral Deficiencies, Camel Milk Prevents or Fixes Them All!

Image
Image 1: To the average inhabitant of the Western hemisphere camels are probably not the most beautiful animals under the sun; but hey, cows aren't either, hah? When muscle-heads think of dairy, they think of whey, they think of casein, they think of cottage cheese... but I bet few of them will think of camels! Even if you just went by the mere amino acid composition (see. figure 2 at the end of the article), of which you, as an educated SuppVersity student should by now be aware that it does not give you the 'whole picture', as far as the biological effects of a given protein and peptide containing foodstuff is concerned, it appears that camel milk would at least make an excellent alternative for cows milk, in case global warming is progressing and Europe and the US turn into desert wastelands... but all jokes aside, muscle is not everything and I bet that after reading this article you will be interested to register for the US' first official camel milking semin...

Set to Be Obese? Epigenetic Programing in Utero - The Roles of Over- & Undernutrition, High & Low Protein, Fruits, Veggies, Zinc, Magnesium, Chromium, Vitamins & More

Image 1: Your mother's diet is not the sole cause of your love handles and health problems, but it could well have tipped the scale to your fat disadvantage. Don't be resentful, but don't repeat the same mistakes, either! While it is certainly false to assume that anyone can't help but to get obese, it's similarly hard to deny that some people just have to cut back on the coke and sweets they eat to get back in shape, while others struggle with shedding superfluous weight (=fat) and regaining their health even if they are in a reasonable caloric deficit, eat a whole foods diet and exercise regularly. "It must be in my genes!" is what you will usually hear from people on both ends of the spectrum and while the former will smile at you and grab the next best snickers bar, just "to make sure that they don't lose too much weight", the unfortunate people on the other end of the spectrum are clutching to each and every straw, or, in these day...

Lose(!) 33% Body Fat in 10 Days!? The Heavy Metal Obesity Link: Study Shows "Preventive Role" for Inorganic Cobalt in Obesity-Related Diseases.

Image
Image 1: Cobalt - certainly not what you would expect to see at a health food store or pharmacy; with Kawakami et al.'s study this may change in the future (img Alchemist-hp ) "We are living in a toxic world!" - you have probably heard or read this sentence more than once and while I cannot deny that the environmental load of, among others, heavy metals appears to be increasing, I can however tell you that, according to a recent study from scientists from the Tukushima Bunri University in Japan, exposure to some of those heavy metals produces quite unexpected results in a rodent model of the metabolic syndrome and in lean controls. Instead of making them gain weight even more rapidly, the "toxic" (maybe we will have to reconsider that, just as we did in the case of chromium) heavy metal cobalt did not only reduce the weight of the white adipose tissue of the rodents, it increased leptin, adiponectin, and HDL-cholesterol, as well, and thusly "may have ...
