10%(+) Reduction in Testosterone After Glucose and Whey Protein Shakes - Is the Classic #BB Shake Anti-Anabolic?

Image
We're talking about a cross-over study in adolescent subjects and acute changes but that's neither the only nor the most relevant reason you don't have to be afraid of the bodybuilding staple, now. In fact, a closer look at the data seems to suggest that we're talking about a 'protein-anabolic decrease in testosterone'... sounds odd? Well, here's how it may relate to your #androgenReceptors (AR) and eventually your gainz, irrespective of your age, by the way. I have previously addressed the possible ill effects of very high protein intakes on your testosterone levels - in particular, when those intakes are combined with a caloric deficit and, accordingly, reduced intakes of glucose and fat (re-read "True or False - High or Low Protein Intakes Have Profound Influence on Testosterone, SHBG, Estrogen, Cortisol & Co?" | here )... Now, a new study in Clinical Endocrinology  ( Schwartz 2019 ) shows that testosterone ⇆ protein/carbohydrate inter...

True or False? Muscle Damage From Workouts Can Impair Skeletal Muscle Glucose Uptake and Insulin Sensitivity

Image
I have to admit, I cannot answer the question about the effects of muscle damage on glycemia once and for all, but for the average workout, it's probably irrelevant and the overall effect beneficial. While I have to admit that I do not know in which of the roughly 2300 published articles I have referred to the studies by Asp et al. (1995), I do  know that a new study from the  Tatung Institute of Technology and the  Department of Sports Sciences at the University of Taipei  (Ho 2016) shows that the experimentally verified reduction in GLUT-4 expression in isolated human skeletal muscle cells probably  lacks practical relevance. The reason that I write "probably", is that we do now have one study that suggests beneficial (Ho 2016) and one that found detrimental effects (Asp 1995) - and a couple of reasons why neither of the studies is fully convincing. One important determinant of your 24h insulin levels is your meal frequency : Grazin' Bad For the Ob...

Glucose or Caffeine? What to Snort to Boost Your Exercise Performance? Glucose Spray Increases Avg. Power Sign.

Image
Pre-workout drinks were yesterday, the modern athlete snorts his ergogenics. No, I didn't mean the headline to be figurative. A recent study in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance  built on the observation that nasal sprays (NAS) containing caffeine (CAF) or glucose (GLUC) activate the sensory(motor) cortices in your brain. In their latest study, Kevin De Pauw, et al. investigate whether this effect would translate to real-world increases in exercise and/or cognitive performance (reaction times). Nitrate from Beets Improves Glucose Response to 75g CHO - Antibacterial Mouthwash Blocks This + Other Benefits

Image
Honestly, for me it's not the improved glucose management, but rather the proof that you must not use antibacterial mouthwash that's the takeaway, here. What? Yes, the use of mouthwash can ruin all beneficial effects of nitrate containing foods - those on your blood pressure, those on your pump and - as a recent study from the  Colorado State University  indicates - even the beneficial effects the co-ingestion of beetroot juice with carbohydrates will have on obese individuals' glucose tolerance. Oh, you're not obese? Well, in that case, the effect is not going to reach statistical significance, but since it's not going to be zero and you can learn something about the incompatibility of your nitrate-based pre-workout performance enhancing   pump supplement and antibacterial mouthwash, it's still worth reading the rest of today's SuppVersity  article. Allegedly 'Harmless' Thyroid-Based Fat Burner 3,5-T2 Works Like a Charm, While Commonly Sold 3,3-T2 Could Mess W/ Your Blood Glucose Levels, Liver & Body Fat + Muscle

Image
These are the kind of abs, you will see on products with T2 and/or T2 and other alleged fat-burners. Don't be fooled by the ads - even if it's the actually active form of diiodothyronine (T2), namely 3,5-T2, you're buying, the pills alone won't get you to the sub-10% body fat range you  may be dreaming of. I've written about the thyroid hormone metabolite  diiodothyronine aka T2 before. Accordingly, you will probably know that it has long been thought of as an inactive byproduct of the thyroid hormone metabolism ( read previous T2-articles ). You will also be aware of the fact that research shows that (a) this is not the case and that (b) only one of its two forms, namely 3,5-diiodothyronine (3,5-T2) shares the fat burning, metabolic effects of its big brother triiodothyronine aka T3. Just like me, you probably don't know, however, why supplement companies are still stupid enough to use both 3,5- and 3,3-diiodothyronine in their allegedly fat burning suppl...
