Massage Therapy Speeds Recovery in Bodybuilders After Eccentric Workouts - DOMS + CK ↓ / Performance ↑

Image
While many athletes use it and trainers all around the world are convinced that it works, the evidence on what exactly massage therapy does or doesn't do to an exhausted athlete's muscle and lymphatic system is scarce. Even the assumption that it helps reduce DOMS may be based on a placebo effect. After all, it's impossible to conduct a truly double-blinded massage study. If they can afford it, athletes often employ their own massage therapist. It is commonly believed that sport massage after intensive exercise might improve power and perceptual recovery in sportsmen and -women. As Mehdi Kargarfard et al. (2015) point out in their latest paper, "few studies have been done in this area" to confirm what everyone appears to believe to be a scientific fact" (Kargarfard. 2015). Accordingly, the researchers' latest study aimed to examine the effect of massage on the performance of bodybuilders - a group of athletes of which only few will be able to afford...

Electrical Stimulation Improves Clearance of Lactic Acid After Anaerobic Activity in Collegiate Athletes. EMS Turns Out to Be as Effective as 'Traditional' Massage Therapy.

Image 1: The EU-940 EMS device the scientists used in their study to activate the vastus medialis and lateralis (high- lighted in the image) of their subjects, is very different from the average EMS based "abdominal toner" advertised on TV. Even here, at the SuppVersity, news on ergogenics, i.e. things that improve (athletic) performance, are usually about a pill, a fancy plant extract or another 'superfood' . Today's news, however is about a much more "physical" means to improve anaerobic exercise performance, decrease lactate accumulation and improve regeneration: Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS). EMS? Now, many of you will probably remember those TV spots, where you were told that "Abmaster" & Co would transform your pot-belly into a "six-packed" attractant for the opposite sex , if you did not miss this "unique" opportunity and bought one of those electro-shockers no ...

Got a Pot Belly? Stubborn Belly Fat? Unhandy Love Handles? Massage Them Away!

Image
"Massage away your pot belly!" Sounds hillarious, doesn't it. Well, a small study ( Rahimi. 2011 ) coming from scientists from the University of Mashhad in Iran suggests that massaging your love handles could actually facilitate localized fatloss. In their study, Rahimi and Javahery put 16 healthy - I quote - "non-sportsperson male students"  ;-), aged 20-27y on a 5x a week massage regimen (15-20 min) that had, if not outstanding, then at least statistically significant results: The results of correlated t test show that the mean values of skin fold fat of the stomach are of the participants before and after the massage program was 36.81 and 36.12 respectively, which shows a significant decrease after 30 sessions of massage (p=0.036). - 2% skin fold: You are not impressed? Well, me neither. Although the increased blood flow to the subcutaneous fat pads may, as the scientists speculate, have a beneficial effect on local fat mobilization, I would suggest you be...
