Bench Press Study: The Higher the Weight, the Less of it Will be Lifted by Your Pecs - What are the Implications?

Image
Lighter weight = relatively larger contribution of the pecs ≠ greater gains In their latest paper in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research , Henryk Król, and Artur Golas (2017) write about an experiment they designed to identify the "prime movers" during the bench press - an interesting and methodologically complex experiment that can tell us one or two things about the effects of increasing the weight you bench gradually from the standard 12-rep (70%-1RM) to the maximal 1-rep (100%-1RM) load and how it affects the activity of your chest (pectoralis major), front delts (anterior deltoids), triceps (triceps brachii) and even your lats (latissimus dorsi) during different phases of the movement. Full Squat for Full Size Gains, Partial Squat for Full Strength Benefits - Heavy(/-ier) Weights for Both Size & Strength

Image
In most, but unfortunately not all studies, this would be a partial squat... The latest resistance training study from the Charles Sturt University  comes to a somewhat expected suggestion in the practical implications: "[R]esistance training programs designed to change body composition (e.g., hypertrophy, fat loss) are reliant not so much on power and force but more on total work performed, high-intensity FROM [full range of motion] squats should be the focus" (Drinkwater. 2016). Unsurprising for everyone, who has read the previous SuppVersity  articles, in which I've often argued for " full squats for full development ". Different ROMs may also be used as part of classic periodization schemes. 30% More on the Big Three: Squat, DL, BP! Building Extra-Strength With Cluster Training (6x1 With 25s Rest) - Works, but Classic Strength Training is also Effective

Image
Cluster training is something most of you will be familiar with. To do it back squats, instead of curls or bench presses, however, is something you don't see very often in the gym, these days - rightly so? If you want to build muscle strength or size, muscle contractions are obligatory. If that should necessarily be done at high intensities and until failure is still a much debated topic - just as debated as the link between strength and size gains. Cluster training (CL) is a way of training that's supposedly helpful in building strength and hypertrophy. How effective it actually is, however, has rarely been studies in detail... until scientists from the Carnegie School of Sport at the  Leeds Beckett University  compared the acute (metabolic and mechanical) and chronic responses to classic strength (STR), hypertrophy (HYP), and two novel cluster training CL regimens involving the back-squat exercise. If strength is your goal, creatine is your supplement Creatine D...

Full-Body vs. Split Workouts: Body Composition Changes Favor Volume-Equated FB Workouts in Trained Athletes

Image
I guess that most of you will be training according to a split workout, right? You can do so many great bench press and biceps curl variations on "International Chest + Biceps"-Monday... awesome, right? Ok, enough of the sarcasm and back to the science. In this case, a recent study by scientists from the  National Research Institute in Warsaw , the  Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand , the Bond University in Australia and the University of the Sunshine Coast . Said study was conducted by Crewther et al. and published recently in the Biology of Sport . It examined the effects of two equal-volume resistance-training protocols upon strength, body composition and salivary hormones in male rugby union players. You can also incorporate full body training into your  periodization schemes. 30% More on the Big Three: Squat, DL, BP! Creatine & Caffeine Don't Mix!? True or False? Recent Study Sheds *New* Light on an Important Supplement Question

Image
Will a small cup of coffee ruin the benefits you can derive from creatine supplementation? Sounds impossible, but it's a die-hard rumor with surprising scientific backing. Now, a new study could finally settle the debate. As topic for the thesis he submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (Exercise Physiology), Eric T. Trexler selected the "Effects of Creatine, Coffee, and Caffeine Anhydrous on Strength and Sprint Performance" (Trexler. 2015). This is, as some of you will immediately recognize, at least in parts, a variation of the age-old question, whether the purported diuretic effects of caffeine would impair the proven ergogenic effects of creatine. In that, it's a variation, because the domain of concern is not - as it is for most bros - solely restricted to resistance training, but extends beyond t...
