Does it All Begin W/ Vitamin K in the Gut? Vitamin K ⇆ Gut Interactions Link in Intestinal Dysbiosis, Prostate Health and an Emerging Cause of Severe Pregnancy Complications?

Image
Is there a "bacterial link" between prostate issues and pregnancy complications? Are both promoted by a messed up microbiome? You know what a hypothesis is, right? Well, in that case the title of the scientific journal "Medical Hypothesis" should tell you that the two studies the "results" of which I am about to present in the following brief write-up are hypothetical. This means, it will require further research efforts to prove that vitamin K is the missing link in prostate health and to confirm that instestinal dysbioses (=messed up gut microbiome) are at the heart of the an ever-increasing number of pregnancy complications. As of now, both assumptions are based on scientific evidence, the "last" 100% convincing evidence, however, is still missing. Creatine, DHT, Hair Loss & Prostate Cancer - Bro-Scientific Old Wives' Tales or Possible Side Effect? Plus: (Non-)Sense Creatine Loading, Exercise Induced 5-α Reduction & More

Image
Poor guy! Must have taken too much creatine and treated his hair for muscle ;-) Ok, seriously, creatine may have helped a little that he was able to build this impressive physique, but the hair? Come on, seriously!? If you have been around the bulletin boards of the fitness and bodybuilding community, I am pretty sure you will have heard about creatine induced increases in dehydrotestosterone (DHT). Probably you will also have had someone chime in who claimed that his hair started to fall out, when he started to use creatine supplements - right? Well, I guess in that case you will probably also remember how another guy chimed in and said: "Hold on does that mean that creatine will cause prostate cancer?" Never heard something like that? I suggest you trust my word, then; and in case you want "scientific evidence" head over to www.pubmed.com and type in "creatine D" it will offer you "creatine DHT" as one of the typical search phrases people...

Coffee and green coffee bean extracts are by no means the only way by which you are exposed to mycotoxins. Corn, for example, is likewise a favorite for the toxic mold. The same goes for almost all other grains. Common routes of exposure are, amongst others cereals, bread s, wines, and even mils and meats (of swine ad turkey, not chicken; Duarte. 2010) 36%, 32%, 10%, and 16% these are the SuppVersity Figures of the week and the percentages of green coffee bean supplements (remember the chlorogenic acid news in Thursday's installment of the Science Round-Up ) that were contaminated with Ochratoxin A, ochratoxin B, fumonisin B1 and mycophenolic acid , respectively. "Mycotoxins occurred in the following concentration ranges: ochratoxin A: 2.7–136.9 µg/kg, ochratoxin B: 3.5–20.2 µg/kg, fumonisin B1: 110.0–415.0 µg/kg, mycophenolic acid: 43.1–395.0 µg/kg." (Vaclavi. 2013) These poisonous substances are produced by fungi that form during (inproper) storage and are sus...

The "20 / 30 Principle" Sheds 15% Body Fat in 6 Months, Boosts Testosterone & Sexual Performance in Overweight Men. Plus: Six Signs You're Doing Too Much, Already.

One out of four men with newly diagnosed erectile dysfunction is under 40 ( more ) You will probably remember the post about the increasing prevalence of erectile dysfunction in young(er) men on Facebook, the other day ( learn more )!? As of now, one out of four patients who are newly diagnosed with erectile dysfunction are 40 years or younger. That's an alarming trend that certainly cannot be reversed by the use of adulterated OTC libido boosters with high amounts of pharmacological PDE-5 inhibitors that are not listed on the label ( read more on the SuppVersity Facebook Wall and listen live to today's installment of the Science Round Up starting at 12PM EST !). With  30-40% of the overweight men not being able to achieve an erection of maintain it long enough to engage in sexual intercourse, it stands out of question that the root cause for the exploding numbers of impotent young men is diabesity . Against that background it is only logical that Joan Khoo and his co...

You still have a couple of milli- or centimeter too much on your waistline? Let's hope this spring will provide ample time to work out in the sun, after all that's the energizing way to work out, something even virtual reality indoor exercise cannot compete with (Plante. 2006) The SuppVersity figure of the week is "90". That was the average total amount of sunshine hours we got here in North-Rhine-Westphalia within the winter months (DWD. 2013; and there were places with only 40h!). A pretty depressing figure, in the literal sense. If you listened to the last installment of the Science Round Up ( click here to download the podcast), you may remember that I was actually somewhat surprised to hear that this was the darkest Winter ever since the sunshine hours have been recorded - after all, I got my 45min of "artificial sunshine" in, every morning. So, just in case you are still wondering how it's possible to write a blogpost everyday, the data from ...

Image 1: It's neither just as much, nor just as serious, but I would still venture the guess that it will take you more than 30s to digest today's installment of " On Short Notice " - despite the fact that the new format has no lengthy "short news", anymore ;-) For this installment of " On Short Notice " I have decided to go a somewhat different route than before: Originally, the first post you would have read after this short introduction would have dealt with the potential negative health effects of homogenized milk . What was intended as a "on short notice" item, did however become lengthier and lengthier, until it finally turned into an "almost full-length post" (a slightly extended version of this article is going to be published on Monday). This "incident" made me revisit the last installments of this series only to realize that the majority of the supposedly "short" On Short News items had be...
