Scientists Find Whey to Significantly Boost D3 Absorption: Whey Isolate +50%, Casein(ate!) +25% Vitamin D3 Levels

It's worth peeling the protective layer scientists use to cover up potential methodological holes in practical relevance.  Studies usually make it to the SuppVersity  news if they are educative, informative, or practically relevant. In the case of the latest paper by Emilie Lindahl et al. ( 2020 ), one could - at a surface level - argue that all three criteria apply. But hey, this is the SuppVersity  so we're going unpeel the surface and look for cancerous growth in the methodology section 🤣... Extra Protein = Only Marginal Extra-Gains, No Special Effect on Muscle Architecture | Plus: Blend Beats Whey, Again

Image
No, the message of this article is not that protein shakes don't work. It is that your (hopefully) tasty 20g of serving of whey is not going to build slabs of extra muscle. You all know studies which show that protein supplementation during resistance exercise training enhances muscle hypertrophy. As a SuppVersity  reader, you will yet also be aware of the numerous studies which indicate that extra-protein (before or after workouts) can be wasted if the baseline protein intake of the subjects amounts to 1.2-1.5g/kg protein, already (cf Table 1 ). For some of you, this is yet probably not the only surprise this article holds. The large-scale clinical trial by Reidy, et al. did after all also confirm that protein blends may yield slightly better results than everyone's beloved whey protein. High-protein diets are much safer than some 'experts' say, but there are things to consider... Practical Protein Oxidation 101 5x More Than the FDA Allows! Native Wh...

Sip Casein(-ate) NOT Whey for Maximal Net Protein Retention? Not Despite, but Due to Less Leucine?

Image
Image 1: Cows must be stupid animals, right? I mean everybody knows that whey is better than casein, so why would they "spike" their milk with this allegedly inferior protein source, instead of providing us and their calves with the "most anabolic", leucine-loaden whey protein? Or do cows know better than us? Question: "Whey or Casein to maximize protein synthesis?" The answer appears to be easy: Whey, of course! Faster absorption, higher rates of hyperaminoacidemia (higher than normal amino acid levels in the blood), more leucine, more mTOR, more insulin, more, more ... and did I say more? Well, other than maybe Dr. Scott Connelly, who just came out with his new total milk protein based meal supplement product Physique 2.0, you will in fact be hard pressed to find anyone, let alone a renowned expert arguing in favor of casein. Yet still, Marielle P.K.J. Engelen and her colleagues from the University of Arkansas for Medical Science, Maastricht Univers...
