'Survival of the Fittest!' Large-Scale Study Backs Classic Evolutionary Paradigm - Being Unfit Worse Than Smoking | Plus: Fit/Unfit - What are You + What Can You do About it?

Image
Even the difference between having 'below ' vs. 'above average' fitness levels amounts to the same 1.4-fold increase in mortality risk the scientists calculated for smoking cigarettes. When I first read about the latest study from the  Cleveland Clinic and that it would demonstrate that "not working out" was "worse than smoking", I expected that a press-release writer had compared the reduction in mortality risk and physical fitness, which has been observed by a new medium-scale observational study from his employer, to the hazard ratio (HR) other scientists calculated for smoking in a completely different study (or meta-analysis) for publicity reasons. However, upon closer scrutiny, it turned out that both, the hazard ratio for smoking vs. non-smoking, which is 1.41 (p < 0.001), and the hazard ratio for elite vs. low fitness, which is 5.05 (p < 0.01) and hence 3.6 times higher, were based on analyses of the same dataset - cool! The Vampire Approach to Longevity - Young Blood Revives Muscle, Brain & More | Plus: 6+ Less 'Horrific' Alternatives

Download the podcast this article relates to at superhumanradio.net You will probably remember from the SuppVersity  Facebook news (@SuppVersity |  March 15, 2018 ) that scientists believe that they've found the molecule that's responsible for the rejuvenating effects of "young blood". In their study, which expanded on rodent data indicating that the injection of "young blood", i.e. blood from young mice, into the circulation of old(er) mice has multi-dimensional rejuvenating effects, the researchers grew  human  muscle cells (C2C12 myoblasts) in a petri dish and stimulated them w/ media conditioned with 5% plasma from healthy male participants that were either younger (n = 6, 18–35) or older (n = 6, >57 years). What Kalampouka et al. ( 2018 ) observed was that the muscle cells reacted differently to a stimulus in form of a scratch (intended to simulate muscular injury and recovery) depending on whether the cultured in media conditioned plasma from ...

Coffee Lengthens, While Caffeine Shortens Your Telomeres: An Essential Paradox? The Latest Evidence Reviewed

If life "begins with coffee", will it also help you end later with coffee? If you follow the SuppVersity on Facebook, you will be aware that the majority of studies indicates that the chronic consumption of coffee (even in amounts of 5+cups/day) has potent health benefits - at least in normal, healthy individuals. Accordingly, you may not consider the observation Larry Tucker (2017) made when he evaluated the relationship between caffeine intake and coffee consumption and leukocyte telomere length, in his latest study surprising. After all, a drink with overall beneficial effects on one's health, shouldn't have negative effects on our telomere length, a biomarker of the senescence of cells. Hippocrates says: "Let food be thy medicine!" And he was right. Tons of food contain substances that would make pharmacologist proud and filthy rich if he invented and patented them. "Let food be thy medicine" Who said that... ha? Right. Hippocrates. He also said "... and let medicine be thy food." Well, he said it in Greek, but that doesn't make the last part less questionable. I do after all often get emails with "supplement lists" that look as if people would be eating nothing else but medicine. Since this would be a topic for another article, though I will postpone the scolding and get straight to the former part of the Hippocrates quote: "Let food be thy medicine!" If you subscribe to the old Greek's principle, you should also subscribe to the scientific journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research a journal "devoted to health, safety and all aspects of molecular nutrition such as nutritional biochemistry, nu...
