Ketone Esters a Smart Supplement? | Pure Nitrate vs. Beets | Caffeine Muscle Recruitment, Power and Performance

Image
Time for a new installment of the supplement short news . I think it's about time for another installment of the short news, i.e. an article that consists of several brief write-ups on very recent papers. Today's topics are: (1) the question whether it is a smart move to consume ketone esters on top of Gatorade or similar products before your workout; (2) the difference in physiological effects of potassium nitrate and beetroot juice; and (3) how caffeine improves muscle recruitment and hence endurance performance. Sitting or Lying, Not Walking Ups CrossFit Performance and Inter-Set Recovery | Nitrate Shot Allows for "One More Rep" | Electric Brain Stimulation Turns You into Hulk & More

I have to admit: This is an awkward collection of studies, but this is what happens if you (cherry) pick and discuss only those of the papers in the latest issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditio-ning Research  which I personally found interesting / most interesting. Some of you have probably already been missing it. The short science round-ups with the latest scientific evidence from exercise and nutrition science all around the world. Studies such as Mosher's nitrate supplementation study that shows significant increases in the maximal number of reps during strength training. Studies such as Ouelette's study that refutes the notion that walking on a treadmill in-between sets is beneficial for trainees who are working out in the strength-conditioning range (crossfitters). Studies such as Wilson's review of the usefulness of CHO supplements with an unambiguous result in favor of CHO supplements. And studies like Lattari's who tested the effects of transcrani...

Nitrate Supplementation Study Supports "Increased Blood Flow ➲ Increased Performance" Claim From NO-Write-Ups

Image
Does the vasodilatory effect of nitrates have a direct ergogenic effect that correlates with increases in blood flow? If you are someone who actually reads the "product write-ups" (=ads) for NO boosters you will have heard the claim that the NO-induced vasodilation and the subsequent increase in blood flow will have significant performance enhancing effects. If you are a critical thinker, you will yet also have noticed that a "[citation]" (=reference) that would prove this claim is missing... with the publication of a recent study from the  Université Droit et Santé Lille this may change in future write-ups. In said study, Julien Aucouturier et al. tried to determine whether 3 days on NO3-rich beetroot juice would boost the tolerance to supra-maximal intermittent exercise. Conventional vs. Organic Wold Premiere - First Study to Confirm: Yes! Extracts From Organic Beets Have Higher Anti-Cancer Activity Than Conventionally Grown Ones

No matter how you eat, 'em. You got to love your organic beets, 'cause the tumors in your belly will hate 'em ;-) You will probably remember my previous articles about the things you get "extra" with conventional produce, right? The stuff most of you will probably want to avoid. Pesticides, heavy metals, all sorts of nasty chemicals.; obviously all within the tolerable intake level and thus "perfectly safe" - you know ;-) No? Well, in that case, I would suggest that you go back and take (another?) look at "Conventional vs. Organic: It's Not About Getting More, But Getting Less For Your Money. Less Pesticides, Dioxins & Co" ( read more ), before you read today's SuppVersity article about the difference between naturally fermented beetroot juices from organic and conventional production in today's article. There are two things you have to keep in mind, when you want to reap the benefits: Timing and dosage. With the currently available nitrate-based / -containing supplements, and both were probably off for the average customer. It has gotten quiet around nitrate supplements. Irrespective of a handful of interesting studies that were published in the past months (Hoon. 2013; Thompson. 2013), the negative results got more attention among the disappointed consumers of one of the profoundly underdosed nitrate supplements that have suffocated the initial enthusiasm on part of the average and extraordinary gym rat. The use of the natural alternative, i.e. beet root juice, on the other hand, is complicated, because there is little information on how much nitrate you need and how much of it can be found in the average beet from the supermarket. Nitrates for your heart: I know ergogenics are sexy, but how sexy is an increase in performance for someone who suffers from regular age- or self-...

Nitrates + Caffeine - An Ergogenic Sledgehammer For High Intensity Cycling: 46% Improved Time-Trial Performance

Image
You better make sure you are competing in / training for the right sports before you spend you get all excited about a 46% performance increase After the initial excitement was over, it has gotten quiet in the "nitrate" section of the supplement stores - no excited crys, no customers willing to pay whatever it takes, just to get a bottle of the "next big thing". Personally, I'd say that this is mostly a result of the disappointment of users of the mostly extremely underdosed "nitrate supplements" experienced. The not exactly earth-shattering effect sizes that have been reported in many of the more recent studies were are another factor... the 46% increase in time-trial performance and the albeit non-significant 27% difference to the caffeine-only trial, on the other hand, has the potential to rekindle the interest of any athlete for whom longer duration high intensity work at 80% of his / her individual VO2max doesn't sound like HIIT gone wro...
