Coconut Oil 'Pure Poison' or 'Superfood'? These 2x5x PRO vs. CON Human Studies Will Help You to Form an Opinion

Image
Coconut oil yay or nay? Not the B vs. W question Michels' lecture made it. I am pretty sure you will have read about  or even seen the lecture by Karin Michels , the director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumour Epidemiology  at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, which probably got so much attention, because Prof. Michels also works as an epidemiologist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health . In her lecture, she claims that there was no single clinical human study that would refute her claim that coconut oil (CO) was, due to its high concentration of saturated fatty acids (SFA), "pure poison" that would unquestionably "clog your arteries and lead to certain cardiovascular death" (translated based on the video ). The effects of coconut oil in a  low-carbohydrate diet are completely unknown: Protein Oxidation an Issue W/ High PRO Diets? CHO ↓ = Perfor-mance ↓ - What about Avg. Joes? Which Fats Should Mothers-to-Be Consume if They Don't Want Their Kids to be Obese as Early as With 2-7 Years?

Image
Fat is an important nutrient for the unborn child. Accordingly, the question is not if pregnant women should consume fat, it's rather how much and at which ratios saturated, monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids should be consumed. A new study does now go even one step further and tries t assess the optimal amount of individual fatty acids like arachidonic acid (ARA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It should be obvious: Out of ethical reasons, the question from the headline can only be answered based on rodent or epidemiological studies. Now, I am not exactly a fan of epidemiology, but  in this important case, I wouldn't like to rely on rodent data, which tends to deviate significantly from human data in long-term trials spanning several developing periods. As you will probably know, a high-intake ratio of n -6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been suggested to contribute to excess fetal adipose tis...

Is Lard More Fattening Than Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil!? 17% Extra Weight, 32% Extra Fat Gain + Increased Appetite

Image
Not all fats are created equal and lard and hydrogenated vegetable oils are not on the top-list of "healthy fat choices". Our perspective on fat has changed significantly over the last decade. While some people still propagate that "fat is bad" and "should be generally avoided", most experts have stopped bashing fat in general and are now focusing on saturated fats. Saturated fats as they occur in lard,.. but wait! If you take a closer look at the fatty acid composition of lard, it turns out that it contains "only" 39.2% saturated, but 45.1% mono- and 11.2% polyunsaturated fats. That's actually not too far off of the average vegetable shortening with a saturated to monounsaturated to polyunsaturated fat ratio of 25.0 / 41.2 / 28.1% (nutritiondata.com) Lean more about frying , MUFAs, PUFAs  & co at the SuppVersity Std. Produce Your Own No-Bullshit-Bulletproof Frying Oil W/ the Right Herbals: Sage & Rosemary Work Best! + Rosmarinic Acid As Potent as Metformin - Anti-Diabetes & Add. Benefits

Image
Rosemary and Garlic Steak - This is only one out of thousand recipes you will find all over the Internet that inform you how to use rosemary and reap (some) of the health benefits (thing about dosage for taste vs. for medical effects) I am about to outline in todoay's SuppVersity article. I know that I still owe you the 2nd par of the "Perfect Frying Oil" series, and I promise I will write it as soon as I have found convincing evidence to argue that there actually is a "perfect frying oil". In the mean time, I'd suggest you focus on the "tricks" I am about to reveal in today's SuppVersity article and produce your own no-bullshit-bulletproof frying oil by adding... no, not butter and coconut oil, but sage, thyme, and rosemary. If you belong to the extremely studious 10% of the SuppVersity students, you will probably remember that you can easily produce an anti-bacterial marinade based on green tea, lemon and turmeric ( read more ). If y...
