Replacing CHO W/ Protein Won't Impair Glycogen Resyn-thesis | Plus: RT+HIIT & Satellite Cells; BFR & Recovery

If that's what your PWO meal looks like, you're doing it right. I am sorry it took me so long to complete the follow-up to last week's article about the latest "recovery science" - my real job took a toll... in fact, I still have to hurry and will, therefore, skip a lengthy introduction that won't add to the educative value of today's article, anyway... the only thing I would like to say in advance is: I am going to do my best to decrease the interval between SuppVersity  articles again. Maybe it will comfort you to hear that there are five studies in today's research update - five studies that are not all directly related to exercise recovery and yet still practically relevant for your training and nutrition planning (see "What's the practical implication?" at the end of each bullet-point if you want to read only the gist(s)). Nine Recent Studies on Vitamins, Fruits+Veggies, Ketogenic Dieting for Endurance Athletes, Blood Pressure, Cognitive Function, Depression & Gene-Diet-Interactions from 10/17

Looking for the very latest on nutrition science? Look no further: most of the results presented in this installment of the short news have not yet been officially published after their presentation on a conference of the Nutrition Society . I hope you don't mind that I decided to pool the most interesting of the latest studies from the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society in a single article. With the articles on vitamin D, B-vitamins, ketogenic diets in endurance athletes, and so on and so forth all being addressed individually, you can still skip studies you may not be interested in and get the gist (read the title and  the last paragraph of each bullet point) within seconds. As it is usually the case for short-news that are based on presentations at a conference, it will take time for the full papers to be written, reviewed and published. Accordingly, I cannot tell you how many eggs the subjects in the keto-diet study ate and whether they consumed their stakes rare or we...

Minimally Processed and Eaten as Part of a Mediterranean-Style Diet, Red Meat Augments MED's Heart Health Benefits

Image
The extra reduction in diastolic blood pressure may translate to a significantly reduced stroke risk. Especially in younger people, a few mmHg can make a tenfold difference in their risk of stroke. If you follow the mainstream media you will get the impression that eating red meat was worse for your heart than drinking or smoking. In fact, however, the experimental evidence from decently controlled human studies like the latest paper by scientists from the Purdue University  and the  University of Texas Medical Branch , indicate that red meat - if it's still meat and not bought in processed food, i.e. salami, sausages, wurst, etc. is completely harmless, if not beneficial to your heart health. Beneficial? Yes, you read that right: As Lauren E O’Connor's randomized investigator-blinded crossover study shows, adding 70g of beef/pork to a Mediterranean diet has no effect on the beneficial effects of the MED on selected markers of cardiovascular health, it even augmented the...

Study Puts Taurine Back in the Limelight - Sprint Cycling in Trained Athletes Benefits from Taurine, not Caffeine!?

Image
More evidence that the often high taurine content in your energy drinks is more than a mere marketing gag. You will probably remember my recent article about the potentially underestimated contribution of taurine to the performance enhancing effects of Red Bull™ and co. ( read it again). Now, a new study from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science at the St Mary’s University  in Great (soon small) Britain shows: Only taurine, yet not caffeine boosts the sprint cycling performance in trained athletes. And as if that wasn't enough, yet, the study also proves another benefit of taurine I've written about in the past: it reduces the typical (negative) side effects of high(er)-dose caffeine. You can learn more about taurine & other amino acids at the SuppVersity Taurine Pumps Up Strength & Recovery?
