Super Bowl, A Question of Life or Cardiovascular Death! ✰ Are Super BOWLs to Blame For the US Obesity Epidemic? ✰ By BMI Standards the Average NFL Player is "Obese"

Conundrum of the day: Is it really any wonder, that the average American has weight problems if their football stars are obese? After reading the "Cultural Guide to the Super Bowl for People Who Don't Watch Football" ( read it yourself) on Wire.com, I realized that I cannot simply ignore Super Bowl XLVIII and since I have absolutely no idea of how American Football works and how it came about that you, my dear US friends, are going crazy about people carrying a ball that's called FOOT-ball (I mean, it's not "carry-ball") around in your arms, I decided to do what I usually do, when I don't understand things: Look for answers on the science databases on the Internet. I have to admit, I did not really find the answer to my initial question and I still don't know the rules of the game, but I found a couple of "related" stories, you may be interested in: Super-BOWLs to blame for the obesity epidemic (van Kleef. 2012) -- I guess this...

There are a couple of important confounding factors which will determine whether or not you or anyone else can benefit from nitrate supplementation. Sex is yet - as far as I know know - not one of them... ah, by the way, there may be other benefits to nitrates that are "sex-specific", but in this case the semantics are somewhat different ;-) You know that the SuppVersity is all about self-education (hence "-versity " as in Uni versity ), so what would be better than using the publication of the latest paper on the purported ergogonic effects of nitrates as an incentive to "inform" you about the current state of the research? Sounds good? I would think so. Let's take a look, then. What's this nitrate business all about? Contrary to the argument many supplement vendors have been bringing forward to make muscleheads buy their products, the idea is not to use the vasodilating effects for cosmetic pumps that will make you feel - as Arnold said it ...

Figure 1: The structural difference in their molecular structure is the outward sign of the very different biological functions of alanine (left) and beta-alanine (right); one part of the energy supply chain, the other a potent H+ buffer Initially heavily marketed as creatine for athletes competing in sports with weightclasses (similar effects, no water retention) by supplement companies, it has become sort of quiet around the hydrogen buffering amino acid beta-alanine , lately. While most pre-/ and post-workout products have it, hardly anybody seems to care whether it is actually worth adding to the formula - it certainly ain't expensive, though. Thanks to B.D. Kern and T.L. Robinson from the Human Performance and Physical Education Department at the Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, this indifference may well change into a new craze in the future. In their study ( Kern. 2011 ) that is going to be published in the Journal of ...
