The Ketogenic Diet & Your Gains: Study Shows Body Comp. Benefits (Fat ↓), but Decreased Muscle Gains, However...

Unfortunately, the authors do not report what exactly (foods) the subjects ate. I am pretty sure you will already have seen the results of Salvador Vargas' recent study in the  Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition  elsewhere, there are good reasons for me to still address what the authors claim was the first study to determine "if following a KD hypercaloric diet would promote greater gains in fat free mass and fat loss during a hypertrophic training period in resistance-trained men" ( Vargas 2018 ) in an individual post - not just, but also because the scientists were unable to confirm their hypothesis, that a "KD with caloric surplus in combination with RT in trained men would have a positive impact" on both body fat and lean body mass (LBM). 8 Wks W/ Weekly Fasting Day Trigger 6% Reduction of Body Fat % + Improved Mood on Follow Up | Plus: The Three Main Mechanisms Behind Intermittent Fasting's Health Benefits

Image
On fasting days <300ml of vegetable broth, juices or teas were OK. Since the title of the study already gives it away, I suggest that we address the phrase "non-randomized", which describes an essential characteristic of a recent 8-week study that was conducted by scientists from the Freie Universität Berlin  (Germany), right away. Yes, the study was designed as a non-randomized controlled clinical trial with two arms, involving healthy volunteers only. And yes, it is indeed very likely that the subjects who chose to be in the fasting group had a positive bias towards 'not eating' once a week... ...but hey, let's be honest: Isn't that the "real world"? I mean people who will subscribe to any form of intermittent fasting protocol usually do so voluntarily. The fact that the study was nonrandomized is thus in line with the authors' intention which was to "evaluate whether intermittent fasting is an effective preventive measure and wh...

7-Day Protein-Modified Fast - All the Benefits of Fasting W/Out the Risk of Muscle Loss? Human Study Says...

Image
Lean wild salmon would be a good protein source for a PSMF regimen. If you are not familiar with the idea of a "protein modified fast" here's what it's all about: in order to minimize the use of lean tissue as a source of energy, a protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) will combine very low calorie diet with some (often high amounts of) protein, fluids, and vitamin and mineral supplementation. Matthew Furber and his colleagues from the GSK Human Performance Lab and the University of Hertfordshire  and the Anglia Ruskin University  were recently able to proof that this special variety of fasting will not only help you shed body fat at a low risk of significant lean mass declines, it will also have profound health benefits. High-protein diets are much safer than some 'experts' say, but there are things to consider... Practical Protein Oxidation 101 5x More Than the FDA Allows! Body Fat Spot Reduction Works? Liberating Fat W/ Weight, Burning it With Cardio Training is the Key, Study Claims

Image
Spot reduction has hitherto been considered a myth, a new 12-week study from Italy suggests otherwise. "The present data suggest that a training programme entailing localized explosive resistance exercise, prior to an endurance exercise bout, may target specifc adipose tissue sites eliciting localised fat mass loss in the upper and lower limbs," (di Palumbo 2017) that's the conclusion of a recent study by di Palumbo et al. The researchers from the University of Rome  base this assessment on observations in sixteen physically inactive women (age: 31±4; BMI: 27.5±2.1), who were randomly allocated to two groups that completed differently designed 12-week training programs. Physique Athletes Not Prone to Metab./Hormonal 'Damage', Recent Pilot Study in 15 Male & Female Athletes Suggests

Image
Even though the study has male and female study participants this study is still more geared towards the men - why else do we have testosterone, but not estrogen measurements? As the scientists point out as early as in the title, a recent paper by Trexel et al. (2017) is indeed (at best) a "pilot study" to "evaluate changes in body composition, metabolic rate, and hormones during post-competition recovery" in "physique athletes". In view of the lack of reliable data from the contest preparations o bodybuilders and other physique-sport athletes, even this "pilot" data is more than worth reporting. That's particularly true, because it is still not clear, as Trexel et al. write whether the "physiological effects of contest preparation persist after competition" and thus whether "they may predispose [...] to preferential gain of fat mass and prolonged, deleterious endocrine side effects" (Trexel 2017) Read about rather...
