Quick Take: Only 25% Putatively Anabolic Laxogenin Supps Contain Measurable Amounts of the Alleged Muscle Builder

Image
You may find this supplement albeit with a less honest label at your favorite 'hardcore'-supplement store. You will have seen them pop up (and already begin to disappear again) in almost every supplement store that considers itself 'hardcore' but 'natural': laxogenin supplements. By their producers and the shops that sell them corresponding products are marketed as an agent that "can help you add muscle and shed fat", that is "not classified as a prohormone", that "doesn’t need to be cycled" and that "delivers results" and targeted at natural bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts. Update on GAINZ: More Muscle & Strength W/ Exercises You Like | Deadlifting Unshoed NO Power Booster | 50% Sugar NOT Anti-Anabolic | Cryotherapy NO Recovery Boost

Image
No, bro - Losing your shoes won't allow you to magically lift thrice your BW when your current 1-RM is only twice your BW. Who would have thought that? If trained subjects are allowed to chose their 'favorite' exercises (or those they deem most productive) they gain 63% more lean mass in a realistic 9-week study (difference short of sign., though). I guess compared to this result from a recent study from the  University of Tampa , the realizations that deadlifting unshoed doesn't seem to provide a systematic benefit, that sugar does not - if protein intake is adequate - negatively affect anabolism, and that local cryotherapy doesn't just threaten the adaptational processes that occur after your workouts are rather expected results... results that were IMHO still worth summarizing in this October 2017 Suppversity "Update on GAINZ" ;-) If you want to update YOUR gains, try creatine -monohydrate - safe and proven! Panaxatriol - Ginseng Constituent Has Protein-Anabolic Effects When It's Administered After Resistance Training

Image
Warning: It's too early to stockpile ginseng or ginseng capsules, yet... the independent jury is still out there. Ginseng is not exactly the agent you will think about when you hear the word "natural anabolic". And in fact, previous studies using whole ginseng or extracts that were usually standardized for ginsenosides shown to help with dementia in athletes were not exactly encouraging. Against that background, I have to warn you right away (I will repeat my warning in the conclusion) that you should not rush to the next best supermarket or supplement store to get a bag of ginseng roots or pills. Why's that? Well, you cannot be sure that they contain enough of Panaxatriol, which is the active ginseng saponoid that worked the muscle building magic in the latest sponsored proof-of-concept study from Japan. A rodent study (another reason not to literally buy into the hype, yet), yes, albeit one with results I consider worth reporting... if nothing else, because...

Ecdysterone Beats Popular Anabolics!? Plus 75% Muscle Size in 21 Days in Rats - More Than DHT, IGF-1, Dianabol...

Image
Parr et al. suggest that ecdysterone should be added to the WADA list . Actually, I didn't plan to write a SuppVersity  article about an agent of which everybody says that it's a waste of money, but I have to admit that the conclusion that "ecdysterone exhibited a strong hypertrophic effect on the fiber size of rat soleus muscle that was found even stronger compared to the test compounds metandienone (dianabol), estradienedione (trenbolox), and SARM S 1, all administered in the same dose (5 mg/kg body weight, for 21 days)" (Parr. 2015) in the abstract of a recent non-sponsored  (no conflict of interest, either) study from the Freie Universität Berlin intrigued me. In the corresponding study, Parr and colleagues had tested the effects of ecdysterones on the fiber sizes of the soleus muscle (that's mainly slow twitch muscle fibers) of rodents in vivo and in vitro. Is Resistance Training in the PM More Anabolic Than in the AM? Time of the Workout Doesn't Influence Acute Hormonal Response or Circadian Pattern of Testosterone Production

Image
The sun is setting and you're still working out. Could this disrupt your circadian testosterone rhythm? Or is it maybe even beneficial? I mean, you could compensate the natural nadir in testosterone in the PM, right? Testosterone, much like any other hormone, is subject to a circadian rhythm. This means that there are spikes and troughs at certain time points in the day. Now, we all know that a bout of resistance training will also have an effect on testosterone, i.e. it will lead to a measurable increase in the post-workout period, and could thus (a) amplify natural spikes and / or (b) fill natural troughs. Against that background, it appears to be a warranted question, whether one would want to do (a) or (b), i.e. amplify a natural spike as it occur in the morning and head to the gym at 8:00AM, or whether it would make more sense to wait a until the late afternoon / evening to hit the gym at 8:00PM, when the testosterone levels are at a nadir?
