5+x Sleep Supplements that Work: Valerian, Beer, Cherries, Tryptophan, Theanine | Plus: Effects of Fats, Carbs and GI

Image
While milk with honey is better than milk with glucose (Jalilolghadr 2011), it won't improve - if anything mess - with your sleep quality when it's consumed ≤ 1h before bedtime - noteworthy: the same goes for most foods, though. While I have chosen it as the title image for today's SuppVersity  "Sleep Supplement Special", there's actually surprisingly little (not to say "no") evidence that the notorious hot milk with honey will actually improve your sleep significantly. That's in contrast to a number of supplements that are discussed in a recent review by scientists from the Northwestern University; a review that highlights  both , the short-comings of the existing research on dietary supplements for insomnia  and  encourage health practitioners "to explore existing resources and partner with patients to understand their goals and advise on safe and effective use of dietary supplements" (Ring 2017). Protein-Sugar Interactions: Will a Coke/DietCoke Turn Your Lean Steak into a Cheeseburger - Metabolically Speaking?

Image
Does a Coke (diet or regular) really ruin the metabolic benefits of high protein meals? Decrease fat oxidation? Increase fat storage? Boost your appetite? In her recently published blog about the study, Dr. Shanon Casperson writes acknowledges the "beneficial effects of protein-rich diets", its beneficial effect on satiety, its ability to decrease both prospective and real-world food intake, and its beneficial effects on human metabolism. With all the things we know about protein, it is yet quite interesting that we don't know "what happens when we drink a sugar-sweetened beverage with our steak dinner?" (see BMC blog ). The former is the research-question of a recently published study in the OpenAccess Journal  BMC Nutrition  that was conducted by - you guessed it - Casperson et al. (2017). High Protein Medium CHO Promotes Lean Mass Gains and Stable Metabolic Rates Compared to Two Different Macros

Image
This could  not  be a meal from the study too few carbohydrates... even for the medium CHO group. As a SuppVersity reader you're not going to be surprised to hear about beneficial effects of increased (dairy) protein intakes on weight loss. What may be surprising, though, is that the statistics based conclusion of a recent study that determined the effects of 16-week high[er]-dairy-protein, variable-carbohydrate diets and exercise training on body composition in men and women with overweight/obesity says: "Compared to a healthy control diet, energy-restricted high-protein diets containing different proportions of fat and CHO confer no advantage to weight loss or change in body composition in the presence of an appropriate exercise stimulus" (Parr. 2016). Get Your Macros Straight in Two Minutes - Just Three Steps for Low- and High-Carbohydrate Diets | Includes Examples

Image
If you want to "hit your macros", you better hurry to find out what those macros are, before you start weighing everything. So, here are the three steps you got to take before you start ;-) In view of the fact that I am getting questions like "how do I set up my macros" again and again... and did I say "again"? I would like to briefly outline a very easy you can use to create a  baseline macronutrient template you can use for yourself or clients. The process itself involves some mathematics, but don't worry, it's easy and with the examples, I am going to give, even the math-haters out there will be able to come up with a new macro-template in ~2 minutes time. Before I go ahead I would yet briefly like to point out that I am a huge proponent of "food quality" and not a fan of "if it fits your macros" aka "I just want to eat all the shit I have always been eating!" So, for your own sake, please don't forget to ...
