High Dose BCAAs for Cyclists | Colostrum Peptides for Bulking | Intermittent Fasting for Cutting | Probiotics for Muscle Protection -- ISSN'15 Research Review Issue #6

Image
Are you trying to build a body like this? Maybe one of the supplements discussed in this article can help. To make sure that I am not missing other relevant / interesting new research spending time with the ISSN'15 poster presentations, this is going to be the last installment of the ISSN'15 Research Review . With six different studies in one installment of the series it is obviously difficult to find a common theme. With studies on the ergogenic and pro-anabolic effects of various supplements, I am yet sure that there's (at least) one interesting study for everyone. So what's your favorite? The study on the immune effects of BCAAs, the one investigating the differential effects of coffee and caffeine, or the experiment that probes the safety and effects of bioactive peptides, the one that tests the nootropic effects of alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, caffeine or placebo or the new study on intermittent fasting? No Additional Gains With PWO Protein + Leucine Shakes in Rookies? Why the "Shocking" Results of a Recent Study Don't Mean That They, Let Alone You, Cannot Benefit at All

Image
You can't expect wonders from protein supplements... no matter, when you take them, by the way. But I wouldn't mark them down as useless - even for rookies - based on the study at hand. When I look at the 14 year old kids who need an written permission from their mum to train at the gym buying protein tons o powders and dozens of bars from the vending machines at the gym, even I have to shake my head. Not necessarily, because they're buying those products, but rather about what they tell each other about the effects: "Yo,... recently I ate this protein bar right after my workout and I felt swole for day..." Now, you know that I am into supplement psychology and have no doubt about the fact that said kiddo felt swole all day, but we all know that protein is in no way a supplement the muscle-building and strength advantages of which will show within hours. And with that, I have a perfect transition to today's topic: The recent study from University of Cent...

Sugar Intake or Food Quality - What's the True Motor of the Obesity Epidemic? Plus: What's New in Sports Nutrition?

Image
People don't eat too much sugar. They simply make the wrong food choices. With the publication of the latest issue of the Nutrition Bulletin from the  British Nutrition Foundation,  I am facing a whole host of potentially news-worthy recent papers. Of actual significant interest are yet only two of them. One that focuses on the involvement of different sugars in the obesity epidemic and a second paper that's actually a summary of an expert meeting discussing "what's new in sports nutrition". I have to admit, though, "new" is a relative term - specifically if you are not just reading each and every SuppVersity article, but also all the SuppVersity Facebook News , these "news" shouldn't be that "new" for you. Colostrum Maintains Testosterone, Cortisol and Heart Rate Recovery, Where Whey Fails - During a Five Day Cycling Event With 10 Highly Trained Male Road Cyclists

Legal gear fresh from the udder? If it works for cyclist, it must be real ;-) Some of you will probably remember the corresponding installment of "Ask Dr. Andro" from 2011 that dealt with the question whether colostrum and milk products in general are healthy muscle builders, a waste of money or toxic waste ( read more ). If you do, you will also remember that my review of the literature did support the general benefits of milk proteins, but it did not provide significant evidence that benefits that have been observed in the few existing studies on the ergogenic value of colostrum could not be achieved by whey and/or casein proteins as well. Now, the latest study from the University of Queensland appears to suggest that just this could yet in fact be the case (Shing. 2013) - at least if the outcome measures are the salivary testosterone concentration and modulated autonomic activity over consecutive days of competitive cycling. 10g of whey vs. 10g of cholostrum "...

Looking for a delicious and more creative way than colostrum powered chocolate milk to combine today's seconds? What about Linda Wagner's Chocolate Cherry Bomb Smoothie with Colostrum, Caco, Maca, Acai, almond milk & more? By now you will probably have listened to yesterday's installment of the SuppVersity Science Round-Up either via the Super Human Network live stream , or after downloading the podcast (the Round-Up starts in the 2nd hour) that has now been available for ~20h. In case you did not have the chance to listen live or listen to the podcast, but have a vested interest in erectile (dys-)function , optimal testosterone level s, the connection between testosterone, DHT, estrogen, insulin resistance, obesity, the health of your liver and longevity or you are simply eager to learn more about the latest research on high intensity interval training , steady state cardio,  everyday activity and the fallacy of the "exercise just makes you hungry hyp...
