Even Low "Normal" Plasma Testosterone Levels Associated with 2.5x Higher Risk of Insulin Resistance

"Your levels are in range!" Did you ever have your doctor say that to you? It appears as if next time you hear that sentence, you better ask him "Where 'in range' are my levels, exactly?" At least, the results of a recently published study by Menendez et al. ( Menendez. 2011 ) suggests that it might be worth digging somewhat deeper into this issue. Studying a cohort of 282 men (aged 36 to 85 years) who had "normal concentrations of total testosterone", the scientists found: Serum concentrations of testosterone and bioavailable testosterone were negatively correlated with age, body mass index, waist circumference, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin levels and insulin. Serum concentrations of total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone and SHBG were lower in men with glucose intolerance or diabetes than in those with normal glucose tolerance. Dietary Oxidized Frying Oil Impairs Pancreatic Insulin Release. Vitamin E Helps!

It certainly is no coincidence that a recent study on the detrimental effects of oxidized frying oil (OFA) was published in the British Journal of Nutrition . Afterall, it suggests that the British are at risk of dying out, if they just listened to their appetite and kept over-consuming "Fish and Chips". If you happened to have listened to Carl Lenore's interview with Mike T Nelson's on SuperHumanRadio , last week, you will be familiar with the concept of metabolic flexibility and how important it is for your body to be able to adapt quickly to varying energy demands and sources. A recent study by scientists from the Pittsburgh School of Medicine ( Chomentowski. 2010 ) had a similar background. Along with several markers of metabolic flexibility the group measured intermyofibrillar and subsarcolemmal (SS) mitochondrial content in a sample of forty sedentary adults with a wide spectrum of insulin sensitivity (insulin-sensitive lean subjects, insulin-resistant nondiabetic subjects, and subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus). Men More Prone to Lipid Induced Insulin Resistance than Women

Regardless of the low-carb-craze of the last years, there is still plenty of scientific evidence that an overtly high fat intake (especially without restricting carbohydrate intake) puts you at risk of developing insulin resistance. What's new to the findings of Hoeg et al. (Hoeg. 2010) is that men are obviously more susceptible to lipid induced insulin resistance than women. At least this is, what the data obtained from the infusion of intralipid or saline for 7h to 16 young well matched healthy men and women suggest: Intralipid infusion reduced whole body glucose infusion rate 26% in women and 38% in men (p<0.05) and insulin stimulated leg glucose uptake was reduced significantly less in women (45%) than men (60%) after intralipid infusion. Glucose Intolerance in Obese Rats Due to High Carb Not High Fat Diet

While common wisdom tells us that a high carbohydrate + high fat diet will make us fat and sick. A new study by Fleur et al. ( Fleur. 2010 ) indicates that a free-choice high-fat high-sugar diet induces glucose intolerance in absence of obesity. Also, rats fed a high-fat (low carb) diet avoided the negative effects on insulin tolerance despite similar comparable body weight gains: Interestingly, the HF [=high fat] diet did not affect glucose metabolism , whereas the HFHS [=high fat, high sugar] diet resulted in hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and in glucose intolerance because of a diminished insulin response.
