Cardio First if You Want to Leave the Gym More "Anabolic" Than You Were When You Came in? Study Finds Higher Testosterone Levels & Identical Strength Performance

Image
The "North American Wife Carrying Championship" is probably not what researchers are talking about when they talk about "concomitant exercise"... but when I come to think about it, I wonder what this does to the hormones of the carrier and the carried ;-) Let me preface today's SuppVersity post with a reference to previous posts on exercise order and the statement that I don't believe this question is ever going to be settled. Let's take the greater leptin suppression in response to doing cardio first as an example (see " Cardio Before or After Weights? "). For someone with a <10% body fat level, this may in fact be a downside; after all, rock bottom leptin levels have also been implicated in the etiology of the Athlete Triad . For someone who has got quite a few pounds to lose before he or she can even claim having a flat tummy, on the other hand, there is hardly anything more beneficial than finally ridding him-/herself of chronic lep...

Cardio & Weights - Mutual Exclusives or Synergists? Two New Studies Suggest: Cardio "Before" and After Workouts Offers More Benefits Than Downsides for Strength & Mass

Could "cardio" really be more than just a necessary evil on your way to a physique like this? Yesterday testosterone booster (see " Capsaicin or 28-OB... ") and today already the next "bro favorite": The never ending debate about "cardio and weights" (or should I rather write "cardio vs. weights"). If you are no newcomer to the SuppVersity you will be aware that this is not the first time, we are tackling this issue (e.g. " Cardio Before or After Weights? " or " Before, After or In-Between "). While most of the previous posts did however deal with the question of "How do I do the least damage to my resistance training , if I want to do cardio, as well". The two studies, I have in stock for you, today, would suggest that this question in and out of itself is quite nonsensical and that the "correct", or at least way more productive question must be: "How can I use cardio to promote my st...

Cardio Before or After Weights? While Both are Suboptimal. Greater Reduction in Leptin With Cardio Before Strength Training Would Yet Suggest "Weights First!"

Image 1: Spinning before or after weights? While none will be "optimal" the leptin and cortisol responses in the study at hand would suggest that lifting weights first, will produce more favorable results - especially with respect to improvements in body composition. "Cardio before or after strength training?" This was and still is one of the most debated questions among both amateur and professional trainees who want to combine the muscle building effects of weight lifting and the fat burning effects of classic cardio ( LISS ) or high intensity interval training ( HIIT ). And although it may be debatable, whether or not this practice is advisable, or generally inferior to doing "cardio" and "weights" on seperate days, it does stand to reason that for most non-professional athletes and those, who cannot make of living off their passion, daily, let alone morning + evening sessions, are simply not feasible. And while the difference between t...
