Stressed? Maybe ornithine can help. Or is this study just a hoax!? Sounds like marketing shenanigan, right? "Lower Cortisol, Higher DHEA, Better Sleep W/ Only 400mg of Ornithine Pre-Bed." Ok, if it was marketing it would probably say "with only 5g of ornithine." I mean, 400mg that's not enough to generate significant revenues - is it? But before we get to the marketing side of things, let's first look at the science, researchers from the Research Laboratories for Health Science & Food Technologies present in a recent paper in the Nutrition Journal , an open-access journal which charges scientists a certain fee for processing their papers. Image 1: Arginine based first generation " nitric oxide booster ", such as BSN's NO-Xplode still have a huge fanbase "No NO from l-arginine" , you probably remember this or similar headlines from a few years ago, when the first studies seemed to indicate that l-arginine, the main "working" ingredient in all the (over-)hyped nitric oxide (NO) boosters that had become an integral part of the line-up of each and every major supplement producer was found not to increase the amount of nitric oxide in their consumers' bloodstream. Although these results stand in stark contrast to the early studies using intravenous infusion of l-arginine, which established the myth of the NO and growth hormone boosting effects of 2-amino-5-guanidinovaleric acid (l-arginine) ,  a 2007 study by Malinauskas et al. ( Malinauskas. 2007 ) found that 8% of the male student athletes who participated in their survey were still...

L-Ornithine: Arginine's Overlooked Metabolic Child

Image
Molecular structure of l-ornithine ( HMDB. V2.5 ) Ornithine is an amino acid produced in the urea cycle by the splitting off of urea from arginine. It is a central part of the urea cycle, which allows for the disposal of excess nitrogen. L-Ornithine is also a precursor of citrulline and arginine BUT hardly any of the self-proclaimed supplement gurus know about its proven effects on exercise performance. Almost two years ago, Sugino et.al. ( Sugino. 2008 ) published the results of a study which investigated the effect of 2mg or 6mg l-ornithine supplementation on 120min exercise performance on a cycle ergometer and found that oral L-ornithine administration promoted lipid metabolism and activated the urea cycle from serum triacylglycerol, ketone bodies, free fatty acids, and blood ammonia level changing. L-ornithine significantly attenuated the subjective feeling of fatigue (measured by visual analog scale at postrecovery) compared with postload (P < .01). [...] In the ph...
