Coconut Oil 'Pure Poison' or 'Superfood'? These 2x5x PRO vs. CON Human Studies Will Help You to Form an Opinion

Image
Coconut oil yay or nay? Not the B vs. W question Michels' lecture made it. I am pretty sure you will have read about  or even seen the lecture by Karin Michels , the director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumour Epidemiology  at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, which probably got so much attention, because Prof. Michels also works as an epidemiologist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health . In her lecture, she claims that there was no single clinical human study that would refute her claim that coconut oil (CO) was, due to its high concentration of saturated fatty acids (SFA), "pure poison" that would unquestionably "clog your arteries and lead to certain cardiovascular death" (translated based on the video ). The effects of coconut oil in a  low-carbohydrate diet are completely unknown: Protein Oxidation an Issue W/ High PRO Diets? CHO ↓ = Perfor-mance ↓ - What about Avg. Joes? Not Getting into Ketosis? Try Plain Old Caffeine to Double Your AM Ketone Levels Regardless of High CHO Breakfast

Image
Neither a ketogenic breakfast nor buttered coffee were necessary to double the subjects' ketone production. Ok, I have to admit that the breakfast that was served in the latest study from the Research Center on Aging, Sherbrooke, CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS and the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology, Université de Sherbrooke in Canada (Vandenberghe. 2016) is not exactly what anyone would recommend to people who are trying to get into full ketosis. This, however, does not make the scientists' observation that the addition of 3mg/kg and 5mg/kg of caffeine in form of cheap caffeine pills from the pharmacy will almost (moderate dose) and more than (high dose) double the subjects' ketone production, does not make the latest study from Camille Vandenberghe's lab less interesting. Can Oxidized Proteins Kill You? PROTOX Links Processed High Protein Foods to IBS, Diabetes, Cancer, NAFLD & Co.

Dietary protein sources: You better eat them before they're rancid. There's such a thing as "protein oxidation"? If you are asking yourself this question, you will probably have missed the 20th century studies by Henry D. Dakin (*1880–†1952). Dakin originally reported the oxidative degradation of particular amino acids during digestion and introduced the potential biological consequences of such biochemical reactions. The impact of PROTOX, as this form oxidation is called to distinguish it from the way better known LOX (lipid oxidation) on human health was, at that moment, wholly unknown. As Estévez and Luna point out in a recent paper in the peer-reviewed scientific journal "Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition", PROTOX has been in the focus during the succeeding decades, though, "owing to the association between the oxidative damage to proteins and aging and age-related diseases (Berlett & Stadtman, 1997)" (Estévez. 2016). ...
