Meta-Analysis: Dieting Reduces Food, Fat, Sugar, Starch & Junk-Food Cravings | In Whom? Why? Is it Diet Dependent?

Image
Believe it or not - At least after some time, a severely energy restricted diet will reduce your cravings for donuts, pizza, pasta, and even chocolate statistically significantly - the questions from the headline do yet remain: Who benefits? What's the mechanism? And do the effects depend on your diet / its macros? If you browse blogs and read e-books, you will read highly popular claims like "Dieting is useless, it just makes you hungry. If you want to lose weight, you got to stop eating carbs and reduce insulin." Those claims are popular because they entail the (unwarranted) claim that you could lose weight without cutting back on your energy intake. WRONG! Fortunately, more and more people seem to understand that. One thing that will still be hard for them to swallow is the conclusion of the latest meta-analysis that addresses the ubiquitous claim that "calorie restriction may increase food cravings" (Kahathuduwa 2017), would thus ruin all your weight l...

Meal Timing Crucial for Fat Loss? Is WHEN You Eat More Important for Losing Weight Than HOW MUCH You Eat?

Image
In rodents, incorrect meal timing can partly override the benefits of energy restriction. "You need a caloric deficit to lose weight..." The latest study from the  University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center   does not  refute this principle. It does, however, add to it an "... and you must not eat at the wrong times!" Confused? Alright, here's the elevator's pitch for the latest paper in Cell Metabolism : Scientists fed rodents calorie-reduced diets. Rodents lost weight, but only if they were fed at night (when they would usually be active), a pair-fed group that ate during the day (when mice are usually inactive), on the other hand, didn't lose a gram. Metabolic Effects of Total Fasting Suggest: You Better Eat "Nothing" Than "Some" If You Want to Make Weight - The Metabolic Adaptation to Dieting is Yet Not All That Counts

Image
It is hard and it will cost you muscle, but dieting as in simply eating nothing for a few days won't kill your metabolism and it will shed a lot of weight (assuming you're as obese as the subjects in a new study). Common sense dictates: The more you reduce your energy intake, the more your resting and total energy expenditure will decline. That's a normal adaptational process, right? Right, at least in the short run, however, the equation isn't that easy. Scientists from the from the Newcastle University  just published the results of an interesting experiment, in which they aimed to investigate whether three groups of obese men, exposed to different levels of negative energy balance (fasting, very low calorie diet (VLCD, 2.5MJ/day) and low-calorie diet (LCD, 5.2MJ/day)) in experimental controlled conditions, were characterised by distinct changes in resting and total EE after losing a similar amount of body weight (5% and 10%WL). As the scientists point out, ...

Citrulline = The Dieter's Amino Acid? Citrulline Maintains Muscle Protein Synthesis & Strength Endurance During Caloric Deficits Better Than Leucine!?

Image
Can citrulline supplementation prevent you from hitting a catabolic wall, when you are dieting? And is it more potent than leucine? You have been told "leucine is the most anabolic amino acid known to man", by the guy at your local GNC, the bros in the gym and the "experts" on the board. And yeah, in a way, they all are "right", but the surprising negative effects of HMB supplementation on the muscle catabolism during overtraining ( read more ) should have reminded you that this does not imply that it will also protect your muscles against muscle breakdown and/or have similar "anabolic" effects on a diet. Dieting is a major change in the metabolic stage and another stage means a different cast, among whom citrulline could turn out to be the new star... at least if we trust the results of a recent rodent study. Different metabolic stage - new stars on the scene In their most recent paper Ventura et al. describe the results of a rodents...

5% Calorie Restriction & Longterm Dieting Make You Fat & Insulin Resistant. Plus: Model Predicts Weight Loss Based On Number of Weight Lost & Diet Pill Use On Previous Diets

Image
Image 1: "Bikini Body Now!" , headlines like this and the unfair suggestion that by following diet X or taking supplement Y you would make it onto the cover of a magazine like that are part of the problem why diets fail, people get discouraged and caught in the diet trap. The issue of yoyo dieting and the existence and non-existence of a body weight or body fat set-point has been an issue in more than a handful of SuppVersity posts, already ( click here to read more). None of the studies I cited (and not even one of those I have read) did yet provide a conclusive and experimentally verifiable answer to the question whether or not there is such a thing as a "set point" and how or even if dieting influences the latter. What common "wisdom" would suggest, though, is that dieting will ruin your metabolism, so that both the post-dieting weight rebound, as well as future problems with losing weight would be programmed. So the question is: Can you diet...
