There's Microplastics in Our Poop! Wait! Do We Even Care? An Evidence-Based Estimate of our Microplastic Exposure and its Putative Effects on Gut-Health & Beyond

It's impossible you haven't read or heard about this study! I guess by now, all of you will have heard that an internationally covered pilot study by Austrian researchers (Schwabl et al. 2018) that was presented earlier this week at the  UEG Week in Vienna  claims to have initial prove that "Microplastics Find Their Way Into [Our] Gut" ( NYTimes ). The results of the studies are all over the place and the (fearmongering) press coverage seems to convey only one message: "Uh oh, now we're doomed!" But, are we? I mean, we're talking about a study with N=8 subjects?! Moreover, no one questions our exposure to the sub-millimeter sized particles and the fact that we actually seem to poop them out would, after all, suggest that they do not accumulate in our bodies - that's good news, isn't it!? If MPs have ill health effects they are probably mediated via their effects on our gut-health Bugs Dictate What You Crave Sweeteners & You...

Plasticized - Put Up or Shut Up: How Toxic is Our Daily Load of Bisphenol A and What are the Main Routes of Exposure?

"BPA free" labels may help to sell products. With more and more of the replacements being identified as just as, sometimes more hazardous than the original, they are, however, by no means as safe as the average consumer is made to believe by the industry. I have been keepin' you up-to-date on the latest research on bisphenol A and often not less toxic alternatives in the Facebook news  (if you didn't do that already, like facebook.com/SuppVersity to see them in your newsfeed). The publication of a new review by scientists from the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin in Poland reminded me that it may be worth addressing this ubiquitous hormonal disrupter in a detailed article again. As Tomza-Marciniak et al. point out as early as in the first sentence of the abstract to their review (which had been published ahead of print in June and was now officially published in the  Journal of Applied Toxicology ), "bisphenol A (BPA) is characterized ...

You still have a couple of milli- or centimeter too much on your waistline? Let's hope this spring will provide ample time to work out in the sun, after all that's the energizing way to work out, something even virtual reality indoor exercise cannot compete with (Plante. 2006) The SuppVersity figure of the week is "90". That was the average total amount of sunshine hours we got here in North-Rhine-Westphalia within the winter months (DWD. 2013; and there were places with only 40h!). A pretty depressing figure, in the literal sense. If you listened to the last installment of the Science Round Up ( click here to download the podcast), you may remember that I was actually somewhat surprised to hear that this was the darkest Winter ever since the sunshine hours have been recorded - after all, I got my 45min of "artificial sunshine" in, every morning. So, just in case you are still wondering how it's possible to write a blogpost everyday, the data from ...
