Carbs Before Workout Won't Lock Your Ab Fat in its Stores | Plus: Wired for Laziness, Standing for Your Health and 'Cardio' Reversibly Promotes Microbial Diversity in Guts

Image
Spiking insulin w/ high GI carbs before a workout doesn't blunt the release of fat from the stores covering your abs. Whenever I hit on journals like the latest issue of Medicine in Sports Science , a publication by the American College of Sports Medicine . I contemplate using them as a resource for an installment of the short news - albeit only if more than one of the studies in said journals are actually worth talking about. For the November issue of Medicine in Sports Science , this was the case for four studies. First and foremost, probably Baur's experimental counterevidence to the hypothesis that the carbohydrate-induced surge in insulin would 'seal' your subcutaneous body fat stores. It may not be necessary to attack your ab-fat, but fasting does have a handful of benefits: Monthly 5-Day Fast Works "Lean Gains" Fast Works Habits Determine Effects of Fasting Protein Modified Fast 4 Health IF + Resistance Training = WIN ADF Bea...

10 Days of 'Paleo Life in the Wilderness' Will Strip up to 18 cm off Your Waist and Boost Your Insulin Sensitivity by 53%

Image
Even though it may have been funny, this is not exactly how the scientists simulated the "paleo lifestyle" in the study at hand. Eventually, however, it came down to eating healthier, being active and even being stressed (within the limits of natural "paleo stress", though). No, this science website is not going to turn into a paleo blog, ... don't worry. It's mere coincidence that this is the 2nd "paleo" study in 2 weeks that is interesting enough to get its own SuppVersity  article devoted to it ( last one ). Moreover, said study, which was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal  BioMed Research International , recently (Pruimboom. 2016), doesn't even have the world "paleo" in title of full-text and could still be called "the true paleo" study. It does, after all, revolve around a 10-day mimic of a "hunter-gatherer lifestyle" and its favorable effects on anthropometrics and clinical chemical indi...

Nitrate for Muscle+Brain Performance | Walking for Glucose Management | Full Glycogen Stores W/Out Excessive Water Retention | 5x10, 10x10, Cardio How mTOR and Co Respond

Image
If Yap et al. were right and only continuous and not accumulative physical activity mattered, activity trackers like the this would be useless. No one needs a device to remind him of the 30 min of brisk walking he did / skipped today. In today's installment of SuppVersity " On Short Notice ", we're going to take a closer look at a selection of recent papers from the European Journal of Applied Physiology . To be more specific, I will discuss the physiological and psychological effects of dietary nitrate and their potential significance for team athletes. From there we're taking a detour to glycogen resynthesis and its interaction with hydration - a topic that may be highly relevant for bodybuilders and at least interesting for everyone else. Before we then take a departing look at the differential effects of 5x10, 10x10 and endurance exercise on markers of protein synthesis and glucose uptake, we'll spend briefly review the claim that the cumulative physic...

Energy Balance and Everyday Activity Explain Weight Loss Success / Failure W/ Exercise in Men, But Not in Women

Image
Bicycling to work is one of these "small things" that may make the difference between lean and obese. I know this is not what your friends will want to hear, but for 99.9% of them it's  not  their genes which are to blame for their inability to lose weight. It's much simpler than that: It's their inability or unwillingness to induce a large enough caloric deficit to force their bodies to tap into the fat stores. Don't get me wrong: It's obvious that genes, with their direct and indirect influence on one's basal energy requirements (think of being tall vs. being small, if nothing else), amount of muscle, and even ability to handle glucose and fats, will factor in here. In the end, however, it's everyone's knowledge about the dos and don'ts of dieting, effort and dietary adherence that will make the difference. That's no news for you? I think the results of a recent study from the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Texas T...

It Doesn't Have to be an Exhaustive Workout - Increasing Physical Activity Just as Effective as Strength, Endurance or Combined Exercise to Lose Fat and Build Muscle

Image
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, using the bike instead of the car and other means to increase your regular daily physical activity are just as effective as three workouts per week for you or overweight clients who cut their energy intake to lose body weight. What's the reasons your clients' and friends' exercise efforts fail? They are too ambitious. The all-or-nothing approach combined with the expectation that the belly they've build over decades will fade away in weeks is a combination that programs them to fail. Against that background, the results of a recent study from the Technical University of Madrid  are extremely important. After all, the scientists were able to show that a mere increase in daily physical activity is as effective in boosting obese subjects weight loss efforts as "serious" exercise. The aim of the study was simple: To compare the effects of different physical activity programs, in combination with a hypocaloric diet, ...
