Chromium Picolinate Worsens Insulin Sensitivity in Healthy, Non-Diabetic, Non-Obese Individuals by Up to 25%

Image
The more supplements you take the more likely you are to get way more than the 200mcg of chromium of which previous studies have shown that they are useless for healthy people, but at least not detrimental (cf. Lukaski 1996 & 2007; Vincent. 2007). Especially people who like the  'poly-supplementary' approach are yet at risk of getting so much of a this trace mineral that it will hamper not improve their insulin sensitivity. I don't have to tell you that you would already be dead if you were following all the bro-scientific advice that's out there on the Internet and still I usually recognize a certain reluctance to give up on what X suggests and Y has tried an what has worked so well for Z. One of the instances, where I have hitherto been missing a 100% convincing argument to argue that this is just another instance where common wisdom would in fact be better called "common stupidity" is the "insulin mimetic" or "insulin sensitizer...

New Form of Chromium Boosts Protein-Induced Increase in Protein Synthesis Even W/ High Intakes | Plus: Novel Whey Isolate W/ Increased Potency (20:27) - #ISSN17 Special IV/IV

The "Crispy Cauliflower Pizza (low-carb, high protein, high fiber, gluten-free)" from Honey What's Cooking will 26g of protein to what can become >4g protein/kg per day for 2 years without triggering measurable ill health effects on kidney, liver, or bone (Ellerbroeck 2017). Even with this final installment of the #ISSN'17 series, I haven't addressed all the interesting presentations the results of which have been abstracted in the Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Conference and Expo . If you're into going right to the source, I'd thus suggest you (re-)visit the long list of presentations at the JISSN website . With Anya Ellerbroek, Corey Peacock, Tobin Silver, and Jose Antonio's presentation of the results of their 2-year follow-up to the previously discussed high protein study/-ies ( more ), I have in fact saved one of the most relevant presentations for this last installment of the series. Non-Negligable Loss of Minerals & Trace Elements With Sweat in Healthy Boxers

Image
Turkish scientists ( Saraymen. 2010 ) analyzed the sweat of 21 male cross-country boxers and found only a minor loss of trace elements copper , zinc and iron . As my plot of the study results as percentages of the recommended daily allowances (RDA) shows, the loss in magnesium , as well as the chromium are much more pronounced: Figure 1: Loss of minerals and trace elements in 1L of sweat expressed as percentages of the RDA Other than magnesium which is one of the commonest dietary supplements and is consumed in more than adequate amounts by most physically active adults (Hickson. 1986, 1987, 1986; Worme. 1990), studies suggest that chromium intake is rather on the lower end of the range: Recent analyses of self-selected diets in the United States indicate that nutritionally balanced diets contain variable amounts of chromium ranging from 1.2–1.4 ng Cr/MJ (5–6 µg/1000 kcal) (8) to 3.6 ng Cr/MJ (57) based on the foods consumed. Other reported daily intakes of chromium in diets...

"Pecs Like A Chicken?" Chromium Improves Body Composition (in Broiler Chickens)

Some supplements have been there forever, eg. creatine , others re-appear from time to time. Chromium is among the last group of supplemental nutrients which have been en-vogue a few years ago and are mostly neglected these days. With a recent study by Ibrahim et al. your interest in the effects of chromium on body composition may yet raise, again. The scientists fed four groups of broiler chickens (I know no humans ;-) a 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 mg cr-yeast/kg diet respectively. The results were quite interesting: Chromium yeast supplementation treatments caused a significant (p<0.05) increase in plasma glucose levels , while supplemented Cr-yeast at levels of 1 (T3), 1.5 (T4), 2 (T5) mg/kg diet resulted in a significant (p<0.05) increase in total protein and globulin as compared to control group. Alsosupplemented 0.5 (T2) or 2 (T5) mg Cr-yeast resulted in a significant (p<0.05) reduction in total lipid in plasma, whereas cholesterol levels which were significantly (p...

Chromium Ain't Dead Yet: Positive Effects of Chromium Glycinate on Glucose Metabolism and Memory Acquisition in Rats Fed High-Fat Diet

" Chromium "? Sounds familiar, eh? Not too long ago, everybody was all over supplementing with chromium picolloniate to improve insulin sensitivity, to lose fat and to gain muscle. Most human studies, however, failed to reproduce the encouraging results from rodent studies. From todays perspective fat loss and muscle gain, if they occurred would probably have to be considered an indirect effect due to improvements in insulin management, the latter, on the other hand appear to be very real and may even benefit your cognitive performance. When an international team of scientists supplemented male Wistar rats ( n  = 60; weighing 200–220 g) on a high-fat (40%, high-fat diet (HFD)) diet with either chromium-glycinate (CrGly) or chromium-acetate (CrAc) at doses of 0, 40, or 80 Î¼g/kg body weight (BW) for 12 weeks, chromium supplementation ameliorated the detrimental effects of HFD on GLUTs, and Memory (32% reduction in expressions of glucose transporters 1 and 3 (GL...

Berberine, Banaba (Corosolic Acid), Rauwolfia Serpentina, (Apple Cider) Vinegar, Chromium. Supplements to Improve and Restore Insulin Sensitivity - Serving #2

Image
Setbacks are part of the process. Don't be mad at yourself. Get back on the wagon and identify what triggered them. Before we tie into serving #2 of our list of insulin sensitizing supplements, let me just briefly remind you of the imperative to have your lifestyle changes in place before even thinking about spending or, in the case you did not give up the laziness and gluttony, wasting money on dietary supplements, if you ever want to send your insulin resistance, pre- or full-blown diabetes to remission. There is no way you achieve that by leading the same life that caused it, in the first place ( re-read Part I ). Lifestyle changes are more powerful than supplements, and psychology more important than physiology So, enough of the lecturing - at least as far as the lifestyle changes are concerned, let's rather check out what "must have" [A], "may have" [B], "could have" [C] and "should not have" [D] supplements have found t...

6 Weeks of 400mcg Chromium per Day Improve Insulin Sensitivity and Lean Body Mass in Obese Children over Lifestyle Intervention Alone

Chromium , once hyped as a next generation anti-diabetes and lean mass agent, has disappeared from the best-selling lists of supplement vendors. Too few studies were able to confirm the encouraging results from rodent experiments. Possible toxicity issues put the icing on the cake and people just stopped buying it. A very recent study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry ( Kim .2010 ) took another look at whether chromium , which irrefutably is a vital co-factor in insulin production and secretion, may not yet be beneficial for patients with pre-diabetes. The scientists supplemented a group of 25 obese children (age 9-12y) who participated in a 6-week diet and lifestyle intervention with 400mcg chromium chlorid a day and monitored changes in body mass index (BMI; kg/m 2 ), BMI Z -score, waist circumference, body composition and fasting plasma glucose. The results were positive- body composition and insulin sensitivity improved: [...] children who received chromium ...

A Word on Chromium Supplementation and Body Weight/-Composition

Image
In his doctoral thesis at Chester University Brian G. Black investigated the hypothesis that "supplementation with chromium is capable of positively influencing changes in body composition , through increased muscle mass accretion or preservation and reduction of body fat mass in exercising and sedentary individuals." Or in other words, the idea of his dissertation was to evaluate whether the promises of various producers of chromium supplements are scientifically sound, or whether the abating craze about chromium (picolinate) is nothing but a marketing-hype. Black's results, as summarized in the appendix to his dissertation, appear unequivocal at first sight. A closer examination and the consideration of the individual study-design(s) and biases of their authors, however, led Dr. Black to conclude: "The claims that chromium supplements on the market are capable of enhancing body fat loss and muscle mass accretion are not supported by the findings of  well...

Biotin, Folic Acid & B12 & Glucose Management | Part IX of the "There is More To Glucose Control Than Low Carb" - Series: Are Extra "B"s Good for Non-Diabetics as Well?

Image
There is evidence for beneficial effects of B7 and B12 in Alzheimer's. Yet although the this disease is often called "diabetes of the brain" the evidence that B7 and B12 would do anything but ameliorate the damage due to increased blood glucose levels and decreases insulin sensitivity is non-existent. I guess, you will remember that my analysis of the role of thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B5) and pyridoxin (B6) revealed... well, what did it reveal? Not much, aside from the fact that the importance of these B-vitamins in glucose management is probably overrated. For niacin, the fifth B-vitamin I have covered in this series, thing looked much different: At high doses niacin (as nicotinic acid) will have profound effects on your glucose metablism and whether those are beneficial or bad for you may eventually depend on the timing of your niacin supplements. In today's installment of the "There is More to Glucose Control Than Low Carb"-Se...

Set to Be Obese? Epigenetic Programing in Utero - The Roles of Over- & Undernutrition, High & Low Protein, Fruits, Veggies, Zinc, Magnesium, Chromium, Vitamins & More

Image 1: Your mother's diet is not the sole cause of your love handles and health problems, but it could well have tipped the scale to your fat disadvantage. Don't be resentful, but don't repeat the same mistakes, either! While it is certainly false to assume that anyone can't help but to get obese, it's similarly hard to deny that some people just have to cut back on the coke and sweets they eat to get back in shape, while others struggle with shedding superfluous weight (=fat) and regaining their health even if they are in a reasonable caloric deficit, eat a whole foods diet and exercise regularly. "It must be in my genes!" is what you will usually hear from people on both ends of the spectrum and while the former will smile at you and grab the next best snickers bar, just "to make sure that they don't lose too much weight", the unfortunate people on the other end of the spectrum are clutching to each and every straw, or, in these day...
