Intermittent Fasting in Trained Women Adds Same Amount of Muscle, Strips Extra Body Fat (4-6%) | No Effect of HMB

Image
HMB did matter, but not significantly; and fasted training was not involved in the extra-fat loss and improvement in body composition. While it has long been discussed if serious gainz are even possible on time-restricted feeding regimen, such as classic 'intermittent fasting',  SuppVersity readers have known for years that "New 'Lean Gains' Study Confirms: IF Gets Athletes Lean & Improves Insulin Sensitivity W/Out Impairing Their Gains" (➡ article discussing Moro 2016) - that's in men, though, and that, in turn, is one of several factors that make the latest study by Tinsley et al. (2019)  worth looking at. In their latest study, the Texas Tech University  researchers combined two research questions into one study: (a) Does time-restricted feeding  affect the adaptive response to resistance training women? (b) Can this effect be augmented and/or modulated by supplementing the leucine-metabolite HMB  during the fasting phases (and once in the ...

8 Wks W/ Weekly Fasting Day Trigger 6% Reduction of Body Fat % + Improved Mood on Follow Up | Plus: The Three Main Mechanisms Behind Intermittent Fasting's Health Benefits

On fasting days <300ml of vegetable broth, juices or teas were OK. Since the title of the study already gives it away, I suggest that we address the phrase "non-randomized", which describes an essential characteristic of a recent 8-week study that was conducted by scientists from the Freie Universität Berlin  (Germany), right away. Yes, the study was designed as a non-randomized controlled clinical trial with two arms, involving healthy volunteers only. And yes, it is indeed very likely that the subjects who chose to be in the fasting group had a positive bias towards 'not eating' once a week... ...but hey, let's be honest: Isn't that the "real world"? I mean people who will subscribe to any form of intermittent fasting protocol usually do so voluntarily. The fact that the study was nonrandomized is thus in line with the authors' intention which was to "evaluate whether intermittent fasting is an effective preventive measure and wh...

7-Day Protein-Modified Fast - All the Benefits of Fasting W/Out the Risk of Muscle Loss? Human Study Says...

Lean wild salmon would be a good protein source for a PSMF regimen. If you are not familiar with the idea of a "protein modified fast" here's what it's all about: in order to minimize the use of lean tissue as a source of energy, a protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) will combine very low calorie diet with some (often high amounts of) protein, fluids, and vitamin and mineral supplementation. Matthew Furber and his colleagues from the GSK Human Performance Lab and the University of Hertfordshire  and the Anglia Ruskin University  were recently able to proof that this special variety of fasting will not only help you shed body fat at a low risk of significant lean mass declines, it will also have profound health benefits. High-protein diets are much safer than some 'experts' say, but there are things to consider... Practical Protein Oxidation 101 5x More Than the FDA Allows! Breakfast: Eat it or Skip it? Making it High Protein Will Have Habitually Skipping Teens Lose Fat & Curbs Their Hunger

Image
This could have been the HP breakfast. Egg-based pancakes + ham. It is almost like the question "to carb" or "not to carb" and the almost religiously maddish discussions between carb-eaters and ketophiles: The debate revolving around the useful- or uselessness of breakfast, when it comes to health and physique issues. In my more recent articles about the topic I have repeatedly exposed the claim that "not having breakfast is bad for everyone" is total bogus; and while I am not going to go back on that I am about to discuss a study that demonstrates that the right  breakfast, i.e. one that's high in protein, may be extremely better than having no breakfast at all. Vitamins B1, B2, B5 & B6 & Glucose Management | Part VII of the "There is More To Glucose Control Than Low Carb"- Series. Any Real Benefit From Supplementing With "Bs"

Image
Funny or obscene? A woman w/ low vitamin B and thus fortified cornflakes is among the "top images" Google will show you, when you search for B-vits There is an often overlooked reason I am addressing thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), panthotenic acid (B5) and pyridoxine (B6) in one installment of the "There is More to Glucose Control Than Carbohydrates"-Series (read previous installments ): They are all necessary to store glycogen in the liver (Supplee. 1942). In general, a whole foods diet, as recommended in previous SuppVersity articles will easily cover the B-vitamin needs of the average sedentary and physically active individual - in spite of minimally increased requirements for B2 & B6, in particular (Manore. 2000; Woolf. 2008).
