BCAA Free = Body Fat Free | Do BCAAs Make Us Fat or Are They Elevated when We're Fat? Study Suggests the Former

Image
First fat, then carbs and now protein? Are we ever going to stop pointing fingers at individual macronutrients and acknowledge that it's our caloric excess that's making us fat? As a SuppVersity reader the notion that the BCAA levels of obese mammals are chronically elevated is no news for you. In fact, I've written about the potential link between BCAAs and obesity repeatedly over past decade and the findings have been astonishingly consistent: Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs; leucine, isoleucine, and valine) are elevated in the blood of obese, insulin-resistant humans and rodents. What is not consistent, though, is the interpretation of this observation. In most previous articles I've highlighted that the "BCAA question" is - eventually - yet another of those nasty chicken-or-egg questions, where the accumulation of BCAAs in the blood could be both, a cause or consequence of metabolic disease. IIFYM & Nutrient Deficiencies ? | (Iso-)Leucine & Glucose Uptake ↑ | Weight Lifting & Protein (RDA + 60% Required)

Missed the ISSN 14th International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Conference and Expo? I've sifted through the proceedings and picked studies of for a multi-part article series. Today: IIFYM & Nutrient Deficiencies, (Iso-)Leucine & Blood Glucose and the notorious question: How much protein do lifters need? If you have, just like me, been unable to attend the "Fourteenth International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Conference and Expo" on June 22-24, 2017, you have missed the presentations of the following selection of studies I plugged from the proceedings . Studies like Michael Dahlinghaus' short-term (3 week) Paleo diet intervention over the course of which the subjects, the 11 healthy, normal-weight subjects who had been randomized to the intervention group lost 3.27lbs (P < .05), improved their systolic BP by 7.46 (P < .043) and boosted at least one of the fitness measures Dahlinghaus included, i.e. the number of push-ups they could do be...

BCAAs Mess W/ Vegan Glucose Management, Human Study Says - Do You Have to Stay Away From BCAAs, Now?

Image
Are vegan athletes who supplement their low BCAA baseline diet with amino acid powders making an unhealthy mistake? At first sight a recent study from Poland suggests just that. Upon closer scrutiny, however, the practical relevance of the results appear less and less convincing. It seems (and I have to admit that I fell for that logic, too) only logical that vegans, unlike omnivores and lactovegetarians run the risk of not getting enough BCAAs from their diet. After all, their diets allow the neither the consumption of dairy nor many of the other wonderful high BCAA protein sources. Against that background, I would venture the guess that many vegan athletes spike their diets with copious amounts of the ubiquitous BCAA supplements, supplement vendors all around the globe are pushing on unsuspecting customers who have no clue that a new study claims that these supplements may ruin one of the often-heard benefits of vegan diets: improved glucose management and reduced diab...

10g/d BCAA Sign. Affect Gut Tenants & Metabolites - Is This the Reason for Good or Bad Effects of BCAA Supplements?

Image
One major problem with all the "gut microbiome"-research is that we're still having a hard time predicting the health outcomes of specific changes in the total and relative numbers of bacteria. I have to admit that the last posts about BCAAs, here at SuppVersity.com , were mostly "bad news" for BCAA guzzlers, not  because I am biased or like to rant, but simply due to the fact that the studies that have been done lately had negative or no results. With the publication of the latest study from the Institute of Disease Control and Prevention at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences  in Beijing this changed - even if the title, "Metabolic shifts and structural changes in the gut microbiota upon branched‑chain amino acid supplementation in middle‑aged mice" (Yang. 2016) doesn't say anything positive. You can learn more about BCAAs & other amino acids at the SuppVersity Taurine Pumps Up Strength & Recovery? Taurine Improves I...

Science Round-Up July '16 Whoo... those were ~1000 presentations and poster abstracts in the May 2016 supplement of  Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise  and not each of them was exactly "exciting". In order to save you the trouble of going through all of them, I have picked 16 of them and put them together in a Science Round-Up  that spans from taking casein before bed and its effects on your nightly fat oxidation over the long-term (20 weeks!) performance benefits of beta-alanine and GABA's astonishing ability to boost your gains, to the insulin-boosting effects of ketones (+100%). Enjoy. There were also a few studies on periodization schemes - nothing new, though 30% More on the Big Three: Squat, DL, BP!
