Don't tell me you don't have one of these masks at home - I mean how can you expect to have 6pack abs, then  ;-) Isn't it remarkable? It's Thursday again! Unfortunately for you (and in a way for me, because this means I got more to do) Adelfo is still for cramming for his exams so no update from "Your's Truly" this week, but a regular SuppVersity from my side. Before I get to the topic at hand and tell you what the training mask on the right is all about, let me briefly give you the usual sneak peak on today's Science Round-Up on the Super Human Radio Network . The show airs as usual at 1PM EST ( click here to listen to the live str e am) and will (probably) cover the following topics: Resistance training, weight loss and PPAR Concomitant training for endurance athletes Tomato juice the ideal peri-workout drink Vitamin B12 deficiency and vegetarianism / veganism Protect your testes against lead & aluminum If we got enough time, I wi...

Beta-Alanine Does not Make it From Bench to Pool Side: Are the Effects Too Short-Lived? Is Swimming the Wrong Sport? Or Was the Dosage of 3.2g/day Simply Too Low?

Image
Michael Phelbs holding his record-setting 19th Olympic medal. According to the results of the latest Australian study on the real-world effects of beta alanine supplementation during the training and competitive season in elite national level swimmers the touted ergogenic is unlikely to have helped him win only one of those. As the headline of today's SuppVersity post already suggests, a recently published paper by scienstists from the Australian Institute of Sport , the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL) , and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) does unfortunately raise about as many new questions about the real-world value of beta-alanine supplementation as it answers. And that despite the fact that the researchers originally set out to bridge the existing gap between the existing research on beta-alanine supplementation, which involves mainly non-elite participants and laboratory-based performance tests, which do not necessarily relate to e...

Adelfo Cerame - Road to Wheelchair Nationals '12: The Final Countdown! Plus: The "No-Bro" Approach to Peak Form

Image
Image 1: Adelfo now, 9 days before the show. Even if he had not been bedridden, when he began dieting, this is an awesome result - the work of a true pro! And wherever he is going to place in Florida, I am proud to have Adelfo aboard , here at the SuppVersity! ( Click here to learn more about his journey!) As of yet, I don't have kids, so I don't know how it feels, when you have been seeing your son or daughter cramming for the finals, have given stupid advice and have offered all the help you could, but I guess, it must feel somewhat similar to the way I feel now, nine days before my "kid", or I should say, my friend, Adelfo is going to his "finals". I am excited and anxious at the same time. I am convinced he is going to take away his pro-card, but in the end, its up to the judges to decide whether or not Adelfo will be able to top this awesome contest prep off with an unequivocal "#1" on the scorecards of the judging panel. This is part of...

Luteineizing Hormone Boosting Fungus Cordyceps Sinensis is A Powerful Ergogenic: 1.79-fold Increase in Exercise Endurance in Rodents

Image
Figure 1: Cordyceps sinensis (photo NW Botanicals ) Would you have suspected that the parasitic relationship between the fungus and the larva of the ghost moth would turn out to be a powerful ergogenic? No? Well, what if I told you that this very "relationship" is the resource of which the commonly known fungus Cordyceps sinensis is derived? Ok, I see you know this one... A very recent study ( Kumar. 2011 ) which was published in the  Journal of Ethnopharmacology confirmed earlier study results that have attracted supplement companies to this inconspicuous, yet highly ergogenic fungus from the order of the Hypocreales. The Indian scientists investigated the effect of 200 mg/kg of air-dried cordiceps powder (human equivalent approx. 33mg/kg) to rats for 15 days . The 24 rats were randomized to one out of four groups: control (C), CS supplemented without exercise (CSS), exercise (E, swimming exercise 1h/day without load) and CS supplemented along with exercise (C...
