Protein-Sugar Interactions: Will a Coke/DietCoke Turn Your Lean Steak into a Cheeseburger - Metabolically Speaking?

Image
Does a Coke (diet or regular) really ruin the metabolic benefits of high protein meals? Decrease fat oxidation? Increase fat storage? Boost your appetite? In her recently published blog about the study, Dr. Shanon Casperson writes acknowledges the "beneficial effects of protein-rich diets", its beneficial effect on satiety, its ability to decrease both prospective and real-world food intake, and its beneficial effects on human metabolism. With all the things we know about protein, it is yet quite interesting that we don't know "what happens when we drink a sugar-sweetened beverage with our steak dinner?" (see BMC blog ). The former is the research-question of a recently published study in the OpenAccess Journal  BMC Nutrition  that was conducted by - you guessed it - Casperson et al. (2017). Intermittent Fasting Increases 24h Energy Expenditure, But Skipping Breakfast Linked to Reduced Metabolic Flexibility

Image
"To eat or not to eat breakfast?" Unfortunately, the scientists geared their research pretty much to this question. Alright, you all have read my recent Facebook news post  about the reduced energy expenditure students reported in a hitherto unpublished paper. Those of you who have (rightly) pointed out that this was at best preliminary evidence (which is, by the way, exactly what I pointed out, as well), will now feel vindicated: Scientists from the German  University of Hohenheim  report that "when compared with the 3-meal control, 24-h energy expenditure was higher" with a meal-skipping regimen that had a lot of similarity to what many of you will practice and label "intermittent fasting". Nutrient Overfeeding in the Metabolic Chamber: Protein, not Fat Triggers Compensatory Increase in Energy Expenditure

Image
In case you are asking yourselves why the subjects didn't live in the metabolic chamber for the whole study period, take a look at the photo of the metabolic chamber of HealthQ as an example for the "ample" space in a research instrument like this.  Scientist from the  Pennington Biomedical Research Center  have recently conducted a sstudy to quantify the effects of excess energy from fat or protein on energy expenditure of men and women living in a metabolic chamber. A metabolic chamber is a small room a person can live in for a 24 hour period. It is used to measure the metabolic rate of said individual during meals, sleep, and light activities. To do so, scientists measure the heat released from a person's body to determine the energy expenditure of the individual continuously. Compared to "regular" VO2 based short-term measurements studies like the one at hand will therefore provide significantly more reliable information about the effects of certai...

Fasted Cardio & Beyond - Optimal 24h Fatty Oxidation: How It Works, Why It Works & Why It Still May Not Be Worth It

Image
Photo of a typical disciple of the cult of the "fat burning zone". Day 3 of the  SuppVersity Exercise Science Week and for some of you maybe about time to have breakfast... hold on, breakfast? But shouldn't you work out before breakfast? I mean this whole cardio in the morning business you have taken up lately is all about doing it before , not after breakfast isn't it? You grab your WIFI-connected iPhone tune in to the Super Human Radio morning cardio mash-up and hop onto your cycle ergometer, treadmill, rowing machine, elliptical, spinning bike, stepper, or whatever else you may be using  - no breakfast no intra-workout supplement - at least no carbs, right? Ah, and of course you are going to work out at the highest intensity possible, to burn more fat later on, after all, you are no disciple of the cult of the "fat burning zone", right? Right! And still you have your doubts, hah? Now, I can't tell you whether the above has anything to do with...
