Supplement Sensation? Oral Glutathione Supplements Dose-Dependently Double GSH in Randomized Controlled Human Studies. Health Implications Still to Be Determined

Image
Blueberries and other foods w/ tons of polyphenols are GSH boosters (Moskaug. 2005) and make supplements obsolete.  If you have been interested in dietary supplements for some time, I am pretty sure that you will have heard about oral glutathione ob(GSH) supplements in one of the "snake oil warnings" on various websites. The "master antioxidant" as it is called is after all believed by many to be not bioavailable - at least not orally. Studies in animal models, however, have already shown that oral GSH, administered either in the diet or by gavage, has the ability to increase plasma and tissue GSH levels ( Loven. 1986; Aw. 1991; Favilli. 1997; Kariya. 2007). It would thus be more appropriate to say that the efficacy of oral glutathione in humans has not yet been tested in peer-reviewed studies. You can learn more about potential negative sides of too many / the wrong antioxidants : NAC = GSH ↑, Anabolism ↓ Too Much "Vit C" For Gains? Protei...

2g Vitamin C Ameliorate Low Testosterone Levels and Sexual Dysfunction in Diabetic Rats. Usefulness in Normoglycemic Individuals Still Questionable.

Illustration 1: In view of the increase in renal vitamin C clearance with higher plasma levels ( Friedmann. 1940 ), it may be sensible to use a time-released vitamin C formula , or, even better, eat a serving of veggies or fruits that are high in vitamin C multiple times a day Yes, I know, supplemental vitamin C does not ward off the common cold... the same applies for taking super high doses of vitamin C as antioxidant buffers before or around workouts. In fact, studies have shown that the antioxidant overkill of a combination of vitamin C and other powerful antioxidants could negate the beneficial effects exercise has on human blood glucose management. Now, a group of Brazilian scientists has published a rodent study that seems to suggest that in the absence of exercise the addition of 2g (human equivalent for 80kg male) of vitamin C to your diet could partially restore sexually function and increase testosterone levels in diabetic pa...

Rat Study Suggests Increased Selenium Requirements in Athletes

Calcium and magnesium , zinc and maybe chromium those are the top sellers among minerals and trace-minerals. Others, such as selenium are likely to be overlooked by the average fitness maniac, who says to him/herself "Selenium? Its in my multi, anyway!" Yet, a recent study published in Biological Trace Element Research ( Akil. 2010 ) reports well measurable effects of selenium supplementation to rats on an exhaustive exercise regimen. The scientists measured the impact of acute swimming exercise on erythrocyte-reduced glutathione ( GSH ), serum glutathione peroxidase ( GPx ) and superoxide dismutase ( SOD ), and plasma malondialdehyde ( MDA ) and lactate levels of the animals and found: Results of the study indicate that the increase in free radical production and lactate levels due to acute swimming exercise in rats might be offset by selenium supplementation . Selenium supplementation may be important in that it supports the an...
