Organic vs. Conventional: The Overlooked Low Cadmium Advantage. Almost 50% Lower Cd Levels and Half-Lifes of 10-30 Years May Be Another Reason to Buy Organic

Image
Eating organic is not so much about what you get extra (vitamins etc.), but rather about paying more for getting less. Less pesticides and, as recent studies show, significantly less cadmium. In view of the hype around organic produce, it would appear as if this was a bogus question, but previous studies were not able to confirm any of the huge claims you will read all over the internet. The only established benefit so far - and that's certainly not one you should underestimate - appears to be a relative lack of pesticides. Only recently scientists have compared a broad variety of organic and conventially grown crops and found that organically grown crops do tend to have a notably lower cadmium content, as well. According to  conventionally grown crops – on average, about 48 % lower (this estimate takes into account 87 previously reported comparisons). Conventional vs. Organic Wold Premiere - First Study to Confirm: Yes! Extracts From Organic Beets Have Higher Anti-Cancer Activity Than Conventionally Grown Ones

No matter how you eat, 'em. You got to love your organic beets, 'cause the tumors in your belly will hate 'em ;-) You will probably remember my previous articles about the things you get "extra" with conventional produce, right? The stuff most of you will probably want to avoid. Pesticides, heavy metals, all sorts of nasty chemicals.; obviously all within the tolerable intake level and thus "perfectly safe" - you know ;-) No? Well, in that case, I would suggest that you go back and take (another?) look at "Conventional vs. Organic: It's Not About Getting More, But Getting Less For Your Money. Less Pesticides, Dioxins & Co" ( read more ), before you read today's SuppVersity article about the difference between naturally fermented beetroot juices from organic and conventional production in today's article. You can learn more about beetroot juice at the SuppVersity Ask Dr. Andro: Is Creatine Nitrate Worth It? Ni...

Orange Juice to Battle Cancer? Is There Anything to the Recent Mainstream Media News? Plus: How Much of The "Good Stuff" Is Lost Upon Pasteurization?

Image
I am sorry, but if you still believe this was a healthy breakfast, I am not sure you will be able to escape diabesity ;-) You may have read it on one of the major Science News Portals, on Saturday: "[Orange juice] could contribute to chemoprevention at every stage of cancer initiation and progression. Among the most relevant biological effects of OJ [orange juice] is the juice's antigenotoxic and antimutagenic potential, which was shown in cells in culture and in rodents and humans." (Taylor & Francis. Press Release from 13. September 2013). Really? And what about the >20% increased diabetes risk from drinking fruit juices (Muraki. 2013)? If that's what you have just been thinking, I bet you will like to get some more information about the hesperidine and naringenine content of orange juice and how these could influence cancer development. Three epidemiological studies! Really? It does not take much these days to turn hopes into hypes - for ora...

Conventional vs. Organic: It's Not About Getting More, But Getting Less For Your Money. Less Pesticides, Dioxins & Co

Image
Image 1: The Ökomonitoring program took a very different approach to the question whether or not organic products are worth the extra cost, they did not look for the additional edge, but rather the "subtractive edge", if you will, and tried to answer the question: "Can we even produce 'organically' in an increasingly polluted environment"; now ten years after the program started the answer appears to be "Yes!" (MLR. 2012a) "Organic produce is no better than conventional! You are being ripped off!" Statements like this have made the headlines in the past couple of days and many people (obviously not you, though!) are scandalized or shaking their head haughtily uttering things "I knew it, and that's why I always buy the cheapest..." What both groups are missing, though is the simple fact that the question the scientists posed, or rather the question the journalists put to the forefront, i.e. "Are organically produced ...

Urban Gardening: 12x More Cadmium in Your Tomatoes Than in the Conventional Produce? Plus: Domestic vs. Foreign & Conventional vs. Organic - What's Healthier?

Image
Image 1: Allotment gardens are the new trend among young families in Germany, 45% of the 1,000,000 allotment gardens that were previously the territory of stuffy men and their garden goblins are already in their hands - that equals a total "acreage" of 21,000hectar - let's hope none of these gardens is right next to a street. Those of you who have listened to the "Urban Gardening" episodes Alisa Profumo did on Super Human Radio back in 2011 (click here to download Part I and Part II ) may remember that it is not impossible to grow your own vegetables, herbs and more - and that not just in a large garden. In fact, " urban gardening ", which has here in Germany long been regarded as antiquated and "for grandmas and grandpas only" has become fashionable again, as more and more people enjoy the comfort of "knowing what they eat". Unfortunately, a recently published German study shows that believing does not mean knowing; or do y...
