Can Sandalore®, a Cheap Synthetic Replacement of Sandal-wood Extracts in Perfumes, Regrow Your Lost Scalp Hair?

Image
It's not clear if natural sandalwood extract will do the same as the synthetic sandalore that's used as a cheap sandal-wood replacement in perfumes (for more info on the difference read the green infobox in the bottom-line). A recent press release has been the #3 most viewed and debated posts on my social media accounts , recently; second only to my MTHFR and sucralose articles, the press release from my "colleagues" at the University of Münster (obviously I am working on my Ph.D. at the Physics Department , not at the Dermatology Department ;-) created quite a stir not just among SuppVersity  readers, but also among the general public from A as Australia to Z as Zambia (well, almost *lol*). But let's be honest: Is that really surprising? If you take into consideration that >50% of the male population and an ever-increasing number of females is affected by excess hair loss - reasons include regular aging ( Van Neste 2004 , Trüeb 2005 & 2006 ), ...

Hair Loss: Finasteride, Laser Light or Minoxidil - What Will Really Help Men & Women Regrow Lost Scalp Hair?

Image
Men may be at a higher risk, but androge-netic hair loss is not a male exclusive. Minoxidil, Finasteride, and low-level laser light therapy are Food and Drug Administration-approved/-cleared treatments for androgenetic alopecia, but do they actually work? That was one of the questions Areej Adil and Marshall Godwin tried to answer in a recent review; a systematic review and meta-analysis the scientists from the  Memorial University of Newfoundland  published in the Journal of the American Acadamy of Dermatology very recently and a paper of which its authors claim that I will clear up the confusion about the seemingly conflicting results of individual studies. Androgen 3-Some: BPA Exposure & Free Testosterone in Men. TRT Good For the Prostate. DHT, Alopecia (Hair Loss) & Monascus Fermentation. Plus: Mycotoxins in GCB Supps

Image
Coffee and green coffee bean extracts are by no means the only way by which you are exposed to mycotoxins. Corn, for example, is likewise a favorite for the toxic mold. The same goes for almost all other grains. Common routes of exposure are, amongst others cereals, bread s, wines, and even mils and meats (of swine ad turkey, not chicken; Duarte. 2010) 36%, 32%, 10%, and 16% these are the SuppVersity Figures of the week and the percentages of green coffee bean supplements (remember the chlorogenic acid news in Thursday's installment of the Science Round-Up ) that were contaminated with Ochratoxin A, ochratoxin B, fumonisin B1 and mycophenolic acid , respectively. "Mycotoxins occurred in the following concentration ranges: ochratoxin A: 2.7–136.9 µg/kg, ochratoxin B: 3.5–20.2 µg/kg, fumonisin B1: 110.0–415.0 µg/kg, mycophenolic acid: 43.1–395.0 µg/kg." (Vaclavi. 2013) These poisonous substances are produced by fungi that form during (inproper) storage and are sus...

It's never too early for your first push-up ;-) "10" is this week's SuppVersity figure of the week. Ten as in "ten push-ups" which is the mean number of push-ups the 12 year-old boys and girls from the Coe study you can read about in one of the items of today's news mash-up aka " On Short Notice ". I am honestly not yet sure what to make of it, it's not as bad as what I had expected based on a couple of observations I have made as of late, but it still goes to show you that you cannot take the most fundamental feats of physical fitness for granted, when it comes to pre-/peri-pubertal kids in today's sedentary society. Now, while I am still trying to make up my mind I would suggest we take a look at the actual outcomes of the study. The 10 push-ups were after all only part of the subject characteristics and not the reason Coe et al. actually conducted their study. Fit Kids are smart kids - Strength and cardio both matter! Problems with High or Low DHT? Use Rice or Safflower to Inhibit and Sorghum to Promote 5-Alpha Reductase!

Image
Image 1: High or too low DHT levels? Nature has the cure for both. Lower your DHT levels with rice bran or safflower flower extracts or raise it with a crude extract from Sorghum bicolor seeds. Hairloss for men, and even more so for women, is certainly one of the nastiest side effects of either naturally or artificially induced hormonal disturbances. And while the vilification of DHT as the #1 inducer of male pattern baldness and a potential cause of female hair loss may be overblown, it is a well-established fact that (over-)expression of DHT, or rather a high / over-activity of the 5a-reductase enzyme which converts testosterone to the ~10x more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone will, over time, lead to a shrinkage and gradual disappearance of affected hair follicles . In that, it is noteworthy that similar to the carcinogenic effects estrogen exerts on female (and male) breast tissue, it is mostly the local and not so much the systemic reduction of testosterone to DHT, or, in...
