Peak & Mean Power + Power Capacity Increase (5-8%) in 11 Trained Women W/ OTC Rhodiola Extract in Non-Sponsored Cross-Over Trial ++ Review of Evidence from Other Studies

Image
While there's some evidence that other plants from the genus "Rhodiola" may have similar effects, you want to rely on the std. exctracts from "Rhodiola Rosea" that were used in several studies if you want to try it | for dosage recommendation, see bottom line. Some of you will probably remember that " Rhodiola " aka"Golden Root" is a putative adaptogen, i.e. a "nontoxic [sic!] substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning" (Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary )... No? Well, I remembered "Rhodiola Rosea", as I should have written before to avoid confusion with other plants from the  same genus , when I saw a recent post by Jason Cholewa on Facebook. The link to a study that was attached to the post didn't just remind me of this almost forgotten herb (ten years ago it was used...

Study Puts Taurine Back in the Limelight - Sprint Cycling in Trained Athletes Benefits from Taurine, not Caffeine!?

Image
More evidence that the often high taurine content in your energy drinks is more than a mere marketing gag. You will probably remember my recent article about the potentially underestimated contribution of taurine to the performance enhancing effects of Red Bull™ and co. ( read it again). Now, a new study from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science at the St Mary’s University  in Great (soon small) Britain shows: Only taurine, yet not caffeine boosts the sprint cycling performance in trained athletes. And as if that wasn't enough, yet, the study also proves another benefit of taurine I've written about in the past: it reduces the typical (negative) side effects of high(er)-dose caffeine. True or False? Intra-Workout BCAA Supplements Are Useful Only For Those Who Produce, Import and Sell Them?

Image
Intra-workout BCAA supplements are marketed specifically to resistance trainees. If they do have anti-catabolic effects, though, those are - just like potential fatigue reducing effects - significantly more likely to occur in endurance trainees. If you go by the results of a 2001 study by Blomstrand et al., which is actually the only study to investigate the effect of BCAA intake on the leg exchange of amino acids along with the change in their muscle concentration during exercise and a 2-h recovery period, it would appear as if the claim that "Intra-Workout BCAA Supplements Are Useful Only For Those Who Produce, Import and Sell Them" was true. The study, which measured the amount of amino acids directly and does thus provide a much better proxy of proteolysis than protease measurements which are "a poor index of muscle proteolysis" (Attaix. 2010), did after all indicate that there is no decrease in the rate of protein degradation when BCAA are consumed during...

The Latest on Glutathione Supplements - Yes, They Can Work; And Yes, They May Even be Beneficial for Athletes

Image
Do you really need even more pills? The answer is "NO!" - even if GSH supplements actually seem to work. If you'd asked me 2 years ago, I'd answered the question whether glutathione (GSH) supplements even work with a determined "I don't think so!" Meanwhile, there have been a handful of interesting papers which indicate that oral glutathione supplements could actually work. The latest and one of the more interesting of these papers comes from the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the K yoto Prefectural University  where Wataru Aoi et al. took the next step and tried to prove the significance of Kovacs-Nolan et al.'s (in press) and Park et al.'s (2014) finding that glutathione is intestinally absorbed and transported intact across the human intestinal epithelial wall in a rodent model and in humans. Protease Supplementation: First Evidence That 1,000mg Bromelain Have Ergogenic Effects in Athletes - Decreased Fatigue & Maintenance of Testosterone During Competition

You won't see the same effects with pineapple/juice (Aiyegbusi. 2011). Proteases are as any Wikipedia user will lean enzymes that break down proteins (proteolysis) by hydrolyzing the peptide bonds that link amino acids together in the polypeptide chain forming the protein. Proteases have evolved multiple times, and different classes of protease can perform the same reaction by completely different catalytic mechanisms. Proteases can be found in animals, plants, bacteria, archaea and viruses. And proteases can be found on among the favorite supplements of naturopath.
