Chamois Creme Potential Reason for Elevated Estrogen in Cyclists +Triathletes Have 2x More Testosterone Than Average Men and 71% More Than Active Individuals

Image
Image 1: Norman Stadler 2004 winner of the Ironman Hawaii probably had a hell of a testosterone boost, when this photo was taken (img. Kai Baumgartner. 2004) Disturbances of the endocrine (=hormonal) milieu are among the hall-mark features of what sport scientists call the "female athlete triad". The unholy trinity of osteoporosis, disordered eating and, as a direct consequence of the aforementioned hormonal imbalances, menstrual disorders. Men, the purportedly "stronger sex", on the other hand are supposedly pretty resistant to exercise-, or, I should say, overtraining-induced hormonal imbalances - bullshit? Well, probably... after all, with insufficient fuel and recovery everyone, man or woman will eventually maneuver him- or herself into a situation where his endocrine system is no longer functioning optimally. A recent study from UCLA does yet show that mother nature must have been aware that a) exercise is part of what the "hunters" (=us men ;-) d...

DHEA Revives Liver of Aged Rats and Improves Antioxidant Reserves and Akt Signaling in Young and Old Rats.

Image 1:  I don't think celebrities realize it, but there is more to anti-aging than an unlined face. New studies show that DHEA could after all help with all sorts of age related diseases (img. antiagingpossible.com ) It's been a while since DHEA was in the news. While I have posted a handfull of mostly beneficial findings related to dehydroepitestosterone (DHEA), the hype that sourrounded its purported anti-aging effect in the late 1990s has completely abated. In view of DHEA's implication  (or rather the lack of the latter) in age-related autoimmune disease, sexual disfunction, osteoporisis, deteroiations of lipid metabolism, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular and liver disease (Basci. 2007- ignificance of  dehydroepiandrosterone  and  dehydroepiandrosterone  sulfate  in  different  diseases), it is questionable how people beyond the age of 40, when DHEA production declines by 2% per year...

Ask Dr. Andro: Are Colostrum and Milk Products in General Healthy Muscle Builders, a Waste of Money or Toxic Waste?

Image
Image 1: Colostrum and other milk products Milky muscle builders or murky allergens? (image from SportRevue 6/2010) Question from Peter Art (via Facebook): Do you still have a plan to release a write up about colostrum or it may be delayed? I am just asking. Answer Dr. Andro: In fact it got delayed, the delay got delayed again and now there is so much delay that I felt like further delaying the write-up would border pathological procrastination... Instead of citing the three existing studies on colostrum, however, I decided to do a more comprehensive " Ask Dr. Andro " segment on the powers and perils of the milky mammalian life-elixir that has been used and later abused (I am referring to the modern way of food processing here) by generations of human beings and is still considered as an "evolutionary inappropriate" foodstuff by some. "Muscle building magic happens, when you put the right stack together", says Carl Lenore in a spot for IronMag...

Thyrotoxins: Soy, Hormonal Contraceptives, Gut Bacteria or Simply Inflammation - Ladies (and Gents), You've Got the Choice, Hypothyroidism Lies Just Beyond the Corner.

Image
Image 1: Thyroid for energy para- thyroid for bone metabolism. I don't know about you, but sometimes I get the feeling I am not doing enough for the female readers of this blog. And, while even this blogpost is not exclusively addressed to the ladies, the majority of hypothyroid patients are women. Part of the explanation for this phenomenon can be found in the title of this blogpost, already. Both, soy, as well as hormonal contraceptives are "ladylike" , these days. Accordingly, overcolonization of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus , or inflammation is all that remains for "real men" (who obviously do not take synthetic gestagens and probably refrain from consuming soy products) to catch up on their female fellow sufferers. But before I totally confuse you, let's take a look at the most recent scientific results. Still ahead of print is a paper by Claudia Lorenz and colleagues ( Lorenz. 2011 ) in wh...
