Leafy Green Veggies Set Omega-6 on Fire? Plus: Proprietary but Worth Mentioning Milk Protein Contrate for Knee Pain

Image
Not new, but still novel: "Proprietary Milk Protein Concentrate" about to make a come(back) in your joint supplements? And what are the implications of the counter-intuitive effects of leafy greens in a(n unhealthy) diet? Does this mean you have to stay away from collard greens (CG), purslane (PL), or orange flesh sweet potato greens (SPG) and other putative health foods? If you follow @SuppVersity on Facebook, you will know the peer-reviewed open access journal " Nutrients " - they publish a lot of interesting papers every month and some even make it from the short news on Facebook to an actual full-length article on the SuppVersity - two studies did just that, today: A study by Johnson et al. with the potential to (eventually unwarrantedly) spoil your appetite for leafy greens and an RCT by Ziegenfuss et al. you should know if you want to stay on top of the research on "joint supplements"... joint supplements that seem to work even for people with m...

Coconut Miracle? Anti-Arthritis Effects of Virgin Coconut Oil Confirmed - Plus: 10 Additional Benefits of "White Gold" From "A" in 'Alzheimer's' to "W" as 'Waist Circumference'

Coconut Wonder, Coconut science or Both? As a seasoned SuppVersity veteran, you will remember that I have been mocking the incredible hype around (virgin) coconut oil for years; not because there wasn't something "magic" to coconut oil, but rather because of the bazillions of incredible web-reports and recommendations and dozens of e-"books" on which the hype was / is built. If you turn your head away from hype and hearsay and take a look at the coconut-science that's out there, the wonder begins to appear "wondrous", but does not disappear. A recent study from the St. Thomas College in Kualalumpur, for example, does confirm the part where coconut oil made a lame person walk again (any similarities to biblical wonders are obviously mere coincidence ;-) The said study was published in the International Immunopharmacology and its abstract says that the results of the corresponding rodent experiment confirm the "potential beneficiary e...

Blocking Inflammation is Like Choking the Fire: Long Term Weight-, Visceral- and Android-Fat Gain in Human Study Emphasizes Essential Role of TNF-α in Metabolic Control

Can cooling down the inflammation make your belly grow!? (Mito-)Hormesis and the important and beneficial role of "inflammatory" cytokines, molecules etc. are one of my favorite topics. It's simply intriguing that health, performance and longevity apparently depend on the presence of a healthy amount (whatever that may be) of inflammation. Even the provision of low dose arsenic does not - as you may expect - shorten, but prolong the lifespan of several common model organisms (Schmeisser. 2013). Findings like these don't just conflict with common sense, they are also in opposition to the still prominent free radical theory of aging and it's central message: Oxidation and inflammation are bad for you! No matter what!  Too little is just as bad as too much Most of you will remember one of my previous articles on (mito-)hormesis - if if that's not the case, I'd recommend you start with the "Inflammation is a True Fat Burner" article ( re...

I am not happy with how the short news on Facebook simply disappear into oblivion. The SuppVersity figure of the week is "920"! "920" as in "920 published posts" here at the SuppVersity . The reason that's the figure of the week is that I have been thinking about ways to reorganize the archive, but am a bit lost on how to structure things in a better way using blogger. This beast simply isn't made for anything that goes beyond a weekly classic blogpost a la "last week I did this and that, read about..." *yawn* What's yet even more enervating is that despite having the huge advantage of being easily posted and directly accessible for all of you, the tons of short news items I post on a daily basis on the SuppVersity Facebook Wall simply disappear into the 'Facebook nirvana'. I currently cannot spend any time on those technical / organizational matters, but in the course of 2013 things are going to change. In the mea...
