Stretching Helps Glucose Control | Curcumin Limits Weight-Regain | Arachidonic Acid + Training = NOT Inflammatory

Image
About time for another installment of the SuppVersity Short News . Isn't it? Today: Stretching + Glycemia, Curcumin + Weight(-Re)Gain, ARA + Inflammation Have you been waiting for a new installment of the SuppVersity Short News ? Well, the waiting just ended. In today's installment, I will shed some light on the weight(re)gain-limiting effects of curcumin and their mechanistic underpinnings, (2) explain how post-prandial stretching may help you control your blood sugar surges, and (3) answer the question whether the (meanwhile hardly available) alleged muscle-building (pro-inflammatory) long-chain omega-6 fatty acid, arachidonic acid (ARA, yes that's the alleged evil twin brother to DHA and EPA), doesn't just improve the myogenic (=muscle promoting) gene response to exercise but will also ruin your health. Read about exercise- and nutrition-related studies in the SuppVersity Short News Alcohol, Microbes & International Chest Day Aug '15 Ex.Res. Upd.:...

Which Fats Should Mothers-to-Be Consume if They Don't Want Their Kids to be Obese as Early as With 2-7 Years?

Image
Fat is an important nutrient for the unborn child. Accordingly, the question is not if pregnant women should consume fat, it's rather how much and at which ratios saturated, monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids should be consumed. A new study does now go even one step further and tries t assess the optimal amount of individual fatty acids like arachidonic acid (ARA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It should be obvious: Out of ethical reasons, the question from the headline can only be answered based on rodent or epidemiological studies. Now, I am not exactly a fan of epidemiology, but  in this important case, I wouldn't like to rely on rodent data, which tends to deviate significantly from human data in long-term trials spanning several developing periods. As you will probably know, a high-intake ratio of n -6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been suggested to contribute to excess fetal adipose tis...

Which Micro- & Macronutrients Intakes Are Associated With High HDL Levels? Study Shows Magnesium & Folate Are, High Carbohydrate & Total Animal Fat Intakes Are Not!

Image
The advantage of HDL is its stability that reduces the risk of plaque build-up in the intestinal wall, which is clogged by the remnants of oxidized LDL and causes heart disease & co. First things first: We are not talking about "hard experimental evidence" as you could generate it in a randomized controlled trial in a metabolic ward. The data I am reporting today is from a cohort with 1,566 participants with extensive lipid phenotype data completed the Harvard Standardized Food Frequency Questionnaire to determine their daily micronutrient intake over the past year - an epidemiological study that used stepwise linear regression was used to separately evaluate the effects of dietary covariates on adjusted levels of HDL-C, HDL-2, HDL-3, and apoA1. Interestingly, this is the first study with a quality data-set that determined the association between specific dietary micronutrients with HDL-C, HDL-2, HDL-3, and apoA1, and how these dietary associati...

Fish Oil or GLA to Treat Acne Vulgaris? Controlled Human Trial Confirms: 2g EPA + DHA or 400mg GLA do the Trick!

Image
If you want to know how to get of pubertal acne, you got to ask professional pubescents ;-) The study at hand is not only the first experimental verification of the efficacy of omega-3 + gamma linoleic acid supplementation in acne treatment, it's also "paleo approved", because it cites a study by no one else but Loraine Cordaine himself ;-) Don't worry, I am just kiddin' around. In spite of the fact that Cordain's study "Acne vulgaris: a disease of Western civilization" (Cordain. 2002) is in fact the #1 on the reference list, the scientists from the Seoul National University College of Medicine refrain from (paleolithic) dairy bashing in their evaluation of "the clinical efficacy and safety of omega-3 fatty acids and of GLA for the treatment of mild to moderate facial acne." (Jung. 2014) If you google "natural acne treatment" it will usually not take long until you find a reference to fish oil and gamma linoleic acid (a...

Restore & Maintain Insulin Sensitivity - Basics: Turn Your Lifestyle Upside Down With These 5 "No-Quick-Fix" Tips

Image
It is hard and it takes time, but as long as it's "only" insulin resistance and not full-blown diabetes (=pancreatic failure) most people can get rid of it by turning their lives upside down. I am sure people are going to misunderstand this, but in the end, insulin resistance was, is and will always be a consequence of "obesity". Maybe not in the way it is currently understood with the BMI determining whether you are "normal" or "obese", but certainly if you define being obese as being fat and storing the most part of the fat in the visceral adipose tissue and the liver. Thus our definition of what I would like to call "metabolically relevant adiposity" instead of "obesity" can apply to lean and "obese" people alike. In fact, the number of people with a "normal body weight" and insulin resistance is ever increasing. So, if you don't want to be one of them, you better keep the following five DO...

Switch From Chicken to Lamb to Rid Yourself of Belly Fat, Reduce Your Triglyceride and Basal Insulin Levels

Image
If you consider this , i.e. you suprailaic body fat (here measured by a caliper, just as it was done in the study at hand), ditching the chicken for some lamb, may be one of the myriad factors that could help you "solve" the problem. Chicken , rice and broccoli . That is still the dietary paradigm, most people have on their minds, when average Joes and Janes are talking (often with some disdain) about what "healthy eating must look like". Now, a recent study from GENUD, the "Growth, Exercise, Nutrition and Development" Research Group at the Universidad de Zaragoza in Spain (Graffe. 2013) suggests that at least item #1 on that list, namely chicken, would have been better replaced with a protein source of which I suspect even most of you won't be consuming on a regular base: Lamb! That a proper sleep hygiene is of utmost important for your health and body composition is something you , as a SuppVersity veteran will be highly familiar with (...
