Physique Athletes Not Prone to Metab./Hormonal 'Damage', Recent Pilot Study in 15 Male & Female Athletes Suggests

Image
Even though the study has male and female study participants this study is still more geared towards the men - why else do we have testosterone, but not estrogen measurements? As the scientists point out as early as in the title, a recent paper by Trexel et al. (2017) is indeed (at best) a "pilot study" to "evaluate changes in body composition, metabolic rate, and hormones during post-competition recovery" in "physique athletes". In view of the lack of reliable data from the contest preparations o bodybuilders and other physique-sport athletes, even this "pilot" data is more than worth reporting. That's particularly true, because it is still not clear, as Trexel et al. write whether the "physiological effects of contest preparation persist after competition" and thus whether "they may predispose [...] to preferential gain of fat mass and prolonged, deleterious endocrine side effects" (Trexel 2017) Read about rather...

Scientifically Designed Nutrition & Conditioning Plan for a Natural Men's Physique Competitor: Effective, but at a Fat-to-LBM Loss Ratio of 1.34 Probably Far from Being 'Optimal'

Image
Men's Physique looks very different from Bodybuilding, but the contest prep is in many ways comparable. A study on a "scientifically designed nutrition and conditioning plan" for natural body builders? Sounds too good to be true, and in fact it is. If you've read the headline which says "a natural bodybuilder" careful, you'd already suspect that what we are dealing with is just another case study... albeit one with interesting insights into a successful 14-week conditioning plan of which the scientists say that it encouraged the consumption of a variety of foods, did not cut out certain macronutrients completely, did not involve excessive amounts of exercise and left the subject enough time to rest and recover. Choline Supplementation Accelerates Fat Loss During Crash Diet in Female Athletes: 2g Choline Double the Rate of Fat Loss in the Last Week Before the Competition

Image
Can you hit the fat hard with choline? I want to be honest with you. I am a huge fan of choline and truly believe that it is hugely under-appreciated, but the prominent relative (not absolute) increase in body fat loss in study at hand must be interpreted with caution - no matter how statistically significant the "choline advantage" may be. Before we can get to said "cautious interpretation", let's briefly take a look at what exactly Gehan Elsawy, Osama Abdelrahman, and Amr Hamza from the Zagazig University and the Mansoura University in Egypt did to produce a 100% increase in body fat loss in their 22 female study participants (15 taekwondo and 7 judo athletes). You can learn more about choline at the SuppVersity Huge GH Spikes from GPC!? Will Sex Before a Competition Hamper Your Performance? Plus: How Can Estrogen, Cortisol, Quail and Muhammad Ali Help Us Answer This Important Question

Image
Image 1: At least in his later life, Muhammad Ali could hardly be considered a "bro". Notwithstanding, he was 100% convinced that having sex the night before a fight was a total no-go. I you are a bro, or frequent one or many of the pertinent boards, the question whether or not sexual intercourse with yourself or your partner will have beneficial, neutral or negative effects on your performance in the gym, and more importantly your gains and endocrine system probably is not news to you. Even in case you do not belong to either of the former categories, I am sure you will have heard about Olympians or other athletes refraining from the previously mentioned exchange of bodily fluids on the day, if not during the whole week, let alone weeks before a competition. Now, as chance would have it, I stumbled across an interesting study that was conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Liege in Belgium (it goes without saying that Liege is in Wallonia, the French-s...

Adelfo Cerame - RtWC: 5 Tricks to Ignite Your Competitive Nature and Attain Things You Never Thought Possible

Image
Image 1: Hard to imagine, but this man was not born with outstanding abs and even believed it was "not in his genes" to attain a physique like this. I don't know if you have noticed, but our common friend Adelfo is stepping up his game. I can still remember when it took him a week to come up with an article which still needed way more than just some superficial editing. These days however, he is not only training and dieting harder than ever (and I am absolute certain, this time the judges won't be able to place him second!), he is also making himself a name as an author, both here, at the SuppVersity , as well as over at his sponsors' Myotropics Physique Magazine . His latest article on Confidence as the key to a "sexier you" is as much of a motivational slam-dunk, as today's installment of the Road to Wheelchair Nationals series , here at the SuppVersity. So, after you have internalized, or as Adelfo wrote "packed away the psychological w...

Adelfo Cerame: Wheelchair Nationals Wrap-Up. Plus: Blueprint to Look Your Best on a "Big Day" in Your Life

Image
Image 1: Adelfo Cerame Jr, 2nd at the Wheelchair Nationals in West Palm Beach, Florida, doing his posing routine. For most of you it is not really news that other than his prep, the contest in Florida did not really work out the way, Adelfo (I and everyone else!) had imagined. Adelfo took 2nd, certainly a good placing, but... ah, I'll just let Adelfo tell you the whole story and leave it up to you to take a closer look at the pictures ( gallery 1 ,  gallery 2 ) and let me and our common friend know, which number you would have had written on the score card, if it had been your decision as a judge. Personally I feel like there are one, maybe two poses (both from the back, cf. image 6 ), where you could arguably have him second, that's it... and yes, I know that I am biased ;-) Back from Florida and more motivated than ever! Before I begin with my write-up on the contest-prep, the traveling and the events at the show, I want to give thanks to the Lord for blessing me wi...
