Drop-Sets Build, Don't Destroy Older Muscle - 50-Y+ Agers Gain >200% More Lean Muscle W/ Extra Creatine | What do Other Studies Say About the Power of Doing Drop-Sets?

Image
Should she drop the weight and add another set? Whether dropsets are superior to regular workouts is unfortu-nately a question the study at hand cannot answer. To learn more, you should read the information in the red box. What I really like about having a few thousand friends on Facebook is that you  point me to the few interesting studies I may not have read yet. One of these studies comes from Darren Candow who posted a link to an interesting "dropset +/- creatine in the elderly" study (Johannsmeyer. 2016) on the ISSN Facebook page . The study was published ahead of print a few days ago and deals with the "[e]ffect of creatine supplementation and drop-set resistance training in untrained aging adults" (Johannsmeyer. 2016). More specifically, the objective of the study was to investigate the effects of creatine supplementation and drop-set resistance training in untrained aging adults. What the study did not do, unfortunately, is to compare drop-set to regu...

High Dose NSAID Boosts Muscle Gains in Elderly Men - 11% Increase in Type II Fiber Size, Type I Grew Only 'on' Tylenol

Are NSAIDs over-the-counter anabolics from the pharmacy next door? Even though this is not the first SuppVersity  article about the effects of NSAIDs or COX-inhibitors like Aspirin, Tylenol, Pain-Eze and co., I would like to highlight one again  that the existing evidence suggests differential effects in young(er) vs. old(er) individuals, with the former seeing no or detrimental and the latter no or beneficial effects when using NSAIDs during resistance training regimen. It is thus neither guaranteed, nor likely that a young man or woman would see the same 28% extra-increase in type I fiber and 11% extra-increase in type II fiber diameter, Trappe et al. describe in their soon-to-be-published paper in the journal of the Gerontological Society of America  (Trappe. 2016). The link to hormesis research is far from being straight-forward Is Vitamin E Good for the Sedentary Slob, Only? Even Ice-Baths Impair the Adapt. Process Vit C+E Impair Muscle Gain...

+25% Increased Quadriceps Weight and Profound Increases in Vascularization in Rodents From Real NO Donor! Study Shows: Nitric Oxide Works, At Least in Old Mice

Image 1: This is what NO boosters promise, yet mostly don't deliver. Many people believe that there is some truth to every myth. And in fact, a recently published study rom the Department of Surgery, Biological Sciences and Human Anatomy & Cell Science (quite a mouthful) at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, shows that even there may be a quantum of truth even in the "arginine" or "nitric oxide" or "pre-workout" or "however else you may want to call it" myth, which says that getting a decent pump will help you build muscle ( Leiter. 2012 ). Now, aside from the fact that the latest generation of those pre-workout supplements boasts of having no arginine in them and relies solely on the stimulant rush the various *amines in them will produce, there is not a single study in which supplementation with X, Y, or Z amount of l-arginine (or other forms of the alpha-amino acid) had produced greater increases in skeletal muscle ...

Its Never Too Late for A Good Steak: Resistance Exercise + 340g Lean Beef Double Muscle Fractional Synthesis Rate in Young and Old

While this is not part of the statistic, my Blogger account provides, I assume that most of you, the students of the SuppVersity, are way below the golden ages of 60+. Yet, even if this is the case, everyone will have a parent, a grand parent, friends or acquaintances, who have a few more years under their belts and begin to complain about little aches and pains. Now, you have good news for these people : They may well avoid many of these maladies by maintaining or even building new muscle mass, if they just follow the same simple principles, of which I hope you already adopted them. Work out & eat healthy with a focus on high quality protein sources to boost protein synthesis and stop protein breakdown. Figure 1: It's beyond me, why one would even question the value of a mouth-watering piece of beef? (photograph by Michael C. Berch (User:MCB) on 2006-11-25, Wikipedia ) A very recent study from the University of Texas ( Paddon-Jones. 2011 ), where a "quality protein...
