Breakfast of the Healthy: Coffee... or a Purple-Orange Carrot Smoothie? Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee and Beyond

Image
Don't worry you can  stick to coffee Good news has become scarce in 2020, it feels. So, let's appreciate the ones we have:  A coffee shortage is not in sight . Reason enough for me to write another "latest coffee research"-article. One that turned out to be a chlorogenic acid (#CGA) article because ...  well, it's still 2020, so scientists drink coffee to speed up their warp-speed operations and don't spend time investigating the effects of the stimulant the world is craving (Think you're drinking a lot of coffee? Are you a Fin ?). You can learn more about coffee and caffeine at the SuppVersity For Caffeine, Timing Matters! 45 Min or More? Study Puts "?" Behind Beneficial Health Effects of Veggies! Is There No Correlation Between Antioxidant Content & Beneficial Health Effects of Cucumber, Lotus & Rape!?

Image
Don't obsess about "optimal" antioxidant contents, just eat your veggies! Over the past couple of weeks, ... no actually over the past years I have repeatedly written about the concept of (mito-)hormesis and its consequences for the well-established, but not necessarily accurate free radical theory of aging (and for some people everything else). ROS, i.e. reactive oxygen species, have been established as an important signalling molecule that is - among other things - heavily involved in the insulin sensitizing effects of exercise. "Inflammation" makes muscles grow and burns body fat and the "what doesn't kill me makes me strong" principle appears to reign everywhere you look. 6 + 1 Convincing Reasons You Should Not Subscribe to the "Chocolate is Good For You" Hype Indiscriminately. Plus: Which Chocolate is the Healthiest? Organic, Baking, Dark?

Image
Your hedonic response usually isn't a good food guide I have never been a great chocolate eater, and the soothing and misleading news about research that would show that chocolate consumption was good for your heart, your brain and your belly have not yet changed this. For a good reason, as I should say. Being written for the average inhabitant of the Western Obesity Belt, the authors of these articles willingly accept that their readers will (mis-)understand them as a soothing incentive not just to maintain their overtly hedonistic lifestyle, but to top it off with an extra portion of super-sized chocolate cookies... I mean, it's "chocolate", right? So it's good for you, even the latest science says so, right? And not just that, even the NY Times writes chocolate is a "health food" ( NY Times. 2009 ) Right, science says: Chocolate is good for you! But when we look closer, the chocolate that is good for you has little to no resemblance to the ca...

"An Apple A Day" & More: Alex Leaf's Reviews Folk Wisdom and Scientific Evidence on a Forbiddenly Healthy Fruit Item

Image
Forbidden fruit or not: You got to love your daily apples ;-) Guestpost by Alex Leaf An apple a day keeps the doctor away. I’m sure you’ve heard this before. And while there are many ways in which we could keep the doctor at bay with an apple (target practice anyone?), our wellbeing demands we eat the luscious fruit. Truthfully, the old adage could not be truer for a variety of reasons. So to keep things organized I am going to worm through the benefits of apples categorically. Also remember we are dealing with the apple fruit, not the apple fritter or apple flavored candy or the iPhone. I suppose the best starting point is the apple’s nutritional worth. As you can see in the nutritional label to the right, a single medium apple is less than 100 Calories and provides over 10% of the RDA for fiber. Apples also contain every vitamin needed by the body with the exception of Vitamin B12, which is only found in animal products, and Vitamin D, which you can produce by eating your app...

Chocolicious Statin: One Week "on" 100g/day of 70% Dark Chocolate Improves Cholesterol Profile and Reduces Waist Circumference in "Skinny Fat" Women

Image
With the average German eating 9-10kg of chocolate per year we should be pretty heart healthy... well, if more than 10g of those were dark chocolate, I suppose. You know what? I am pretty enervated by the reverberations of the notorious "chocolate makes Nobel Laureates" study. Even now, month after the publication, the media hype and the head-shaking on part of anyone who does have the slightest idea of the difference between association and causation, it's still all over the place. On my part this has lead to a "desensitization" with respect to the word "chocoloate" in medical journals, so that I had almost missed this ground-braking study from the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, the National Institute for Mediterranean Diet and Nutrigenomic in Cosenza and the UOS of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmacology at the University Magna Graecia,Roccelletta di Borgia in Catanzaro, Italy (di Renzo. 2013) Chocol...

It's in the Peel - The Protective Hull of These 61 Super Fruits Can Ward Off Cancer: Prunes, Plums, Jujube, Kiwi, Pitaya, Apple, Banana, Lemon, Cherry, Kumquat, Pomelo,...

Image
Peru Ground Cherries could be among the most potent fruity anti-cancer agents nature has to offer. In all the hoopla around "anti-nutrients", people tend to forget that the majority of the hailed phenols, flavenoids etc. serve the very same purpose, they protect the fruit of certain plants. For a recent study from the School of Public Health and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Guangzhou, as well as the Peking Univerity Fang Li et al. have now compiled an extensive list of fruits, their peels, pulp and seeds and the corresponding anti-proliferative activity, you may want to use as an anti-cancer shopping guide, when you are grocery shopping... and if you do so, don't peel them: the protective peel is where nature stores most of the stuff that kills cancer cells by having them suffocate in their own reactive oxygen species! Keep in mind, while the fruits can kill cancer in the petri dish you would be asking too much if you expect to cure existing cancer by just ...
