Breakfast of the Healthy: Coffee... or a Purple-Orange Carrot Smoothie? Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee and Beyond

Image
Don't worry you can  stick to coffee Good news has become scarce in 2020, it feels. So, let's appreciate the ones we have:  A coffee shortage is not in sight . Reason enough for me to write another "latest coffee research"-article. One that turned out to be a chlorogenic acid (#CGA) article because ...  well, it's still 2020, so scientists drink coffee to speed up their warp-speed operations and don't spend time investigating the effects of the stimulant the world is craving (Think you're drinking a lot of coffee? Are you a Fin ?). You can learn more about coffee and caffeine at the SuppVersity For Caffeine, Timing Matters! 45 Min or More? Why are the captions in the thumbs back? Facebook won't allow replacing the preview picture of links easily. Don't worry, not all news in 2020 is bad news... unfortunately, though, there's some 'bad coffee news' out there, too. In the following overview, I am going to cover a bunch of interesting studies - good and bad news, just as you'd see them in the ever-more non-scientific apocalypse that we live in. Enough said, here's what I've found being published from late September to early October 2020: You can learn more about coffee and caffeine at the SuppVersity For Caffeine, Timing Matters! 45 Min or More? Ketone Esters a Smart Supplement? | Pure Nitrate vs. Beets | Caffeine Muscle Recruitment, Power and Performance

Image
Time for a new installment of the supplement short news . I think it's about time for another installment of the short news, i.e. an article that consists of several brief write-ups on very recent papers. Today's topics are: (1) the question whether it is a smart move to consume ketone esters on top of Gatorade or similar products before your workout; (2) the difference in physiological effects of potassium nitrate and beetroot juice; and (3) how caffeine improves muscle recruitment and hence endurance performance. You can learn more about beetroot juice at the SuppVersity Mouthwash Ruins Benefits of Nitrates Nitrate Drugs Work, But Are Not Safe Win the Super Bowl w/ Beet- root Juice! 140ml of Beetroot Juice That All it Takes! Caffeine & Creatine - Synergists, not Antagonists!? RCT: "Caffeine Potentiates Effects of Creatine" on Torque (+68%)

Image
If you're looking for the extra-kick in leg workouts, the combination of caffeine and creatine may be just what you need.  You will remember that I wrote about the results of Trexel's dissertation from 2015  and that his experimental evidence (real-world) refutes the previously postulated negative feedback of caffeine on the effect of creatine monohydrate on phosphocreatine stores (and thus logically on performance). Against that background, I question to which extent Vandenberghe et al. (36) were right, when they postulated that the interaction between caffeine and creatine can reduce the creatine supply and the pharmacokinetics, it has also IMHO not been proven that caffeine would impair protein synthesis by depleting intracellular calcium that changes the fatigue process but damages protein synthesis. In fact caffeine, there's more recent evidence from Moore et al. (2017) which shows that this is another theory-based hypothesis that cannot be observed in the re...
