Breakfast of the Healthy: Coffee... or a Purple-Orange Carrot Smoothie? Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee and Beyond

Image
Don't worry you can  stick to coffee Good news has become scarce in 2020, it feels. So, let's appreciate the ones we have:  A coffee shortage is not in sight . Reason enough for me to write another "latest coffee research"-article. One that turned out to be a chlorogenic acid (#CGA) article because ...  well, it's still 2020, so scientists drink coffee to speed up their warp-speed operations and don't spend time investigating the effects of the stimulant the world is craving (Think you're drinking a lot of coffee? Are you a Fin ?). You can learn more about coffee and caffeine at the SuppVersity For Caffeine, Timing Matters! 45 Min or More? Why are the captions in the thumbs back? Facebook won't allow replacing the preview picture of links easily. Don't worry, not all news in 2020 is bad news... unfortunately, though, there's some 'bad coffee news' out there, too. In the following overview, I am going to cover a bunch of interesting studies - good and bad news, just as you'd see them in the ever-more non-scientific apocalypse that we live in. Enough said, here's what I've found being published from late September to early October 2020: You can learn more about coffee and caffeine at the SuppVersity For Caffeine, Timing Matters! 45 Min or More? Caffeine Helps When Taken Intra-Workout, too Coffee can Help You Get into Ketosis Post-Workout Coffee Helps With DOMS Coffee Brewing 101 (Optimal Health) Caffeine dosing 4 Testosterone:Cortisol Increase Kenyan coffee - a special bru for glucose management? High CGA Instant Coffee for High Potency Fat Loss: Visceral and Total Fat Loss Increase 6-9-fold 😮, But...

Image
Truth is in the numbers... the absolute  numbers, not the impressive relative visceral fat loss that doesn't show on either scale, measuring tape, or mirror... and yes, that means that Kao's high-octane CGA enhanced coffee is not going to make you lean out effortless- and visibly in 12 weeks in the absence of making the necessary but (by way too many) dreaded dietary / lifestyle changes. "No", it's not #inMice, but "yes", it's sponsored research by the Kao Corporation about whose "High Octane Coffee" I've written last year , already. In their latest paper the Japanese authors of the paper ( Watanabe 2019 ) investigated the effects of daily consumption of coffee enriched in chlorogenic acids (CGA) on abdominal fat area in a 12-wk randomized, double-blind, parallel controlled trial w/ healthy, overweight men and women (n = 150, body mass index (BMI) ≥25 to <30 kg/m²) who were randomly allocated to high-CGA (369 mg CGA/serving) or c...

Coffee - Different Roasts, Different Health Effects | Darker Roasts Better for Weight Loss, Lighter Roasts Healthier!?

Image
Dark, medium or light roast - this is more than just a question of taste! The significant effect of roasting on the phenol-composition of coffee and the consequent health effects are rarely discussed. You may remember my often misinterpreted article about bullet-proof coffee in which I actually defended the fad by providing evidence that the negative effects on blood lipids may actually be cause by not filtering the coffee vs. putting butter into it ( read it ). Well, today I would like to dig a bit deeper into the differential effects not of coffee brewing, but rather of coffee roasting on the of your favorite beverage's major active ingredients and its subsequent effects on your health. Now, to get the bad news out of the way, the study from the  West-German Centre of Diabetes and Health  in Düsseldorf which evaluated these effects unfortunately did so in 118 overweight subjects. Post-Workout Chlorogenic Acid / Caffeine Supplementation - For Good or For Worse? Plus: Glycogen Synthesis & Why A Post-Workout May Be a Better Idea Than You'd Think

Image
"Done,... where is my post-workout coffee?" - Post workout caffeine / chlorogenic acid - good or bad idea? I know it's kind of late to post an article like this months after the ISSN conference, but I recently hit on an overview of the poster presentations and noticed that I did actually miss a couple of interesting studies. Don't worry, I won't be addressing a couple of them in the weeks to come in some detail. Not all are really news-worthy, but aside from today's item on caffeine and chlorogenic acid , there were also posters on nutrient timing , different forms of protein , commercially available supplements and other stuff that's all classic "SuppVersity fodder"? Chlorogenic acid? Isn't that Ozzy's green coffee bean stuff? You are correct, but could actually read about it here at the SuppVersity way before it was on Dr. Oz . Plus, I still believe that there is something wrong with the corresponding study and do still hav...
