Inspiratory Muscle Training, HIIT or RT for Your Kids? Cold Water Immersion & Altitude Training - Who Benefits, When?

Image
This is about as intense as it gets in PA sessions. What about HIIT and RT in schools? With the ahead-of-print publication of articles for one of the future issues of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, it is about time for another SuppVersity Exercise Research Update  in the short news. Today's installment revolves around five question: (a) Who benefits from acute cold-water immersion? (b) Which athletes benefit most from altitude training? Kids' Low GL Breakfast Boosts Cognitive Performance 24h Later | Maternal Low Protein Diet Programs High Myostatin, Low Muscularity | Beef Beats Pickled, Not Baked Herring

Image
We all know this is not a healthy breakfast. What we don't or rather didn't know, though, is that you have to test on two consecutive days to find out how unhealthy it actually is for your kids' brains. With Young's study we learned that. In what? That's probably what you are asking yourself now that you've read that beef beats pickled, but not baked herring, right? Well the answer to this question can be found in my brief summary of the results of Svelander's recent meal-response study. It's, as you may have guessed, the insulin response that sucks for pickled herring. What sucks even more, though, are mothers who are afraid of protein. After all, Liu's latest study shows that they may be setting their kids up to a life as skinny fatness. When I come to think about it, this may yet be better than giving your kids a high glycemic load breakfast to take to school. After all, Young's latest study shows quite impressively what previous studies...

Is the "Fat Kid" Doomed to Stay Fat Forever? What's the Role of Physical Activity Within a Window of Opportunity?

Image
How large is the impact of not being active on childhood, adolescent and adult obesity. Plus: Are there critical time periods in gestation, infancy childhood and adolescence? You may have heard the claim that "fat cells form during childhood and puberty and stay forever" before, right? Well, if that's the case it would be logical to assume that our childhood may be a critical developmental windows in which we have the time-limited opportunity to shape or help shape our own or our kids body composition for the rest of our or their lives. Scientists from Mater Health Services South Brisbane,  the University College of London,  and the  Griffith University  have now reviewed the relatively scarce experimental and abundant observational pertinent research in order to examine "the role of physical activity during periods of risk to reduce the probability of obesity onset and maintenance in adulthood" (Street. 2015). Reduced obese individuals and other things...

Skipping Breakfast Decreases Energy Intake, Water Before Meal Trick Works, Food Addiction Self-Diagnosis, Eating Speed & Obesity, Chilled Water as a Nootropic & More

Food addiction is a self-diagnosed disease that befalls preferentially those people who spend hours and days on the Internet seeking for an excuse for their inability to lose weight. It has been a while since I have published the last installment of the short news . Today, however, the publication of the latest edition of the scientific journal Appetite appears to be a good opportunity to finally put out another of the short news potpourris. I mean, one of the study shows that it may be essential for your well-being to listen to what scientists say and eat healthy, not unhealthy, which is associated with below average well-being in undergraduate students at the Cardiff University (Richards. 2014). But the study by Richards et al. is by no means the only one with highly health-relevant and surprisingly interesting information you will find in today's short news potpourri.
