Vitamin D Supps & Testosterone | Black Tea May Keep You Leaner Than Green Tea | Pea, Oat, Rice Protein & Glycemia

Image
You can expect more research updates like this one in 2019 on the SuppVersity... as well as other changes. And best of all, there's still time to let me know what you'd like to see / be changed over the course of 2019... aside from the overdue switch to a mobile-ready webdesign (#IRemeberThePromises), obviously. While all three studies in this research update have been published last year, they are by no means "yesterday's news" - not even for those of you who "know" the studies which investigated (A) the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the suboptimal testosterone levels of 100 hypogonadal men, (B) the initially very similar but eventually fundamentally different effects of green- and black-tea supplements on the obesogenic effects of high-energy diets, and (C) the beneficial effects of the co-ingestion of plant protein on healthy people's postprandial glucose levels. What's new? Well, study A doesn't really tell you that vitam...

Magnesium Could be in Charge of Your Vitamin D Levels: Supplements Lower High and Increases Low 25OHD Levels

D3 and Mg Supplements not mandatory w/ sun + balanced diet If you subscribed to the @SuppVersity Facebook Page, you will have read the news, already: "Magnesium status and supplementation influence vitamin D status and metabolism" ( Dai 2018 ) - that is both the title and the main results of a recent study from the Vanderbilt University  that is important enough to make it from the short format on Facebook  to a detailed SuppVersity article of its own - the article at hand ;-) The 25OHD-balancing effects Dai et al. observed in their 180 participants (aged 40–85 y) could after all do much more than point towards a reason why everyone and his mama seems to be D-ficient - it could force us to redefine what "optimal" 25OHD levels are - significantly below those many Internet "health experts" recommend. Preformed "Vitamin D" - Can One Serving of Fish or Eggs be All You Need to Satisfy Your Daily Vitamin D Requirement?

Image
"Salmon eggs benedict", the 'perfect' combo for 25OHD3 ( recipe ) "If, as has been suggested, 25(OH)D3 has five times greater bioactivity than vitamin D3, one cooked serve (100 g) of white fish, and one cooked serve of cage or free-range eggs (120 g) may provide 50% or 100%, respectively, of the current guidelines for the adequate intake of vitamin D (5 µg) for Australians aged 1–50 years," Australian researchers conclude in a recent paper that measured the concentration of vitamin D3 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) in four species of white fish (barramundi, basa, hoki and king dory), and chicken eggs (cage and free-range), purchased from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. 2909 IU of Vitamin D3 per Day - That's What Mr. Average Needs | What Do You Need? 3094, 4450, or 7248 IU/day?

Your BMI or rather the associated level of inflammation and bodyfatness determines your D3 requirements. I know that I have previously written about estimated vitamin D requirements, but in contrast to previous articles that were based only on 1-3 studies, today's article about the purported vitamin D requirements of the average Westerner, however, is based on the same previous 108 published estimates and new calculations based on the vitamin D status of 13,987 individuals in various studies Veugelers, Pham and Ekwaru used as the observational database for what is a of now probably the most tangible vitamin D recommendation in their recently published study in Nutrients  (Veugelers. 2015). Stronger & Leaner or Fatter & Less Muscular W/ 4,000IU Vitamin D3 - What if Abstract and Data Tell Different Stories?

Image
Image 1: The gap between the purported and the real world effects of vitamin D3 supplementation remains about as wide as the Grand Canyon - if not wider... and it takes a lot of ignorance towards your own study results to fill this divide up :-o It is astonishing how fast things can change, only last Thursday I said on the SuppVersity Science Roundup on SHR , that hitherto trial after trial with supplemental vitamin D in the form of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) failed to produce the desired results. And what do I have to tell you today? A group of researchers from the Purdue University and the College of Charleston have just published a study that appears to make it necessary for me, to at least rectify the previous assessment by stating: "With the exception of a recent trial from the Purdue University ..." Upon having a closer look at the actual data, it did yet turn out that the gap between what the abstract, on the one hand, and the real data, on the other hand...
