TMAO: Eggs, Meats and Your Cardio-Metabolic Health | You Can Sill Eat Eggs & Meat, If You Got 'the Right Gut Bugs'

Image
The (ill) health effects of choline and its pre-cursor l-carnitine in animal products like eggs or (red) meats are probably mediated by a diet devoid of prebiotics... however, simply pounding more resistant starches, for example, seems to do more harm than good. If you have been following the SuppVersity  News on Facebook ( a must , btw ;-)), you will be aware of the "TMAO"-issue. If not, here's the gist: The ingestion of certain dietary nutrients - primarily choline, phosphatidylcholine, and its precursor l-carnitine can serve as a precursor for the ultimate generation of an atherogenic metabolite, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). TMAO, in turn, has been linked to all sorts of diseases, most prominently cardiovascular disease and the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Unlike "fish odor disease", the choline/CVD link is unrelated to  your genes : DNA-Fit: Train Acc. to 'ur Genes Is Laziness Built Into 'ur Genes? Keep Muscle While Dieting...

α-GPC and Low Thyroid? Fat Loss+Muscle Gains, Possible? More Protein in Shift-Work Diet, 7kg Lower Fat Mass & TC?

Image
In today's installment: Alpha-GCP and reduces thyroid function; accurate body fat measurement in contest prep confirms recomp effect; more protein keeps shift workers lean and healthy. Since I didn't want to bore those of you who are (for whatever reason) not interested in significantly annotated summaries of the studies presented at the last ISSN conference, I've deliberately taken a break before publishing the next installment of the #ISSN17 series ; with this one answering important questions such as: Can alpha-GPC supplements give me hypothyroidism? Can lean individuals still do a "recomp", i.e. lose significant amounts of fat while gaining muscle in short periods of time - What does a gold-standard measurement w/ the 4-C method say? And, last but not least, is a higher protein intake the landmark feature of those night shift workers who don't get obese and sick and how does it work? Interested? Alright, here we go... Fasting  and alpha-GPC have sth...

TeaCrine®, Tribulus, Cordyceps, ALA, Sesamin, Fish Oil & More - The Latest Supplement Science (November 2016)

Image
Many currently available supplements lack sufficient scientific backup. It has been a while since I published the last supplement science update - the recent release of the latest edition of the  Journal of Dietary Supplements reminded me of that. In issue 1 of volume 14 of this journal that "addresses important issues that meet a broad range of interests from researchers, regulators, marketers, educators, and healthcare professionals" (Aims & Scope according to the publisher ) you will find studies on (you already know that from the headline) "TeaCrine®, Tribulus, Guarana, ALA, Sesamin, Fish Oil & More", studies the design and results of which I will briefly summarize for you in the following paragraphs: Read about rather exercise-related studies at the SuppVersity Tri- or Multi-Set Training for Body Recomp.? Older Human Study Shows: 2.72g Carnitine per Day Ward Off Fat Gains - Specifically on the Trunk | User Question: Are We Missing Out If We Are Not Using Carnitine?

Image
SuppVersity reader Derek D. wants to know if 2013 study shows we are missing out if we don't use carnitine. When I answered your questions on Facebook, the other day, Derek D.'s question about the results of a 2013 study by Stephens et al. stood out, because Keller's study suggest that carnitine may be significantly more useful while bulking than it is during a cut (which is still what it is marketed for). If you are a long-term SuppVersity  reader, you will be aware that this is not the first SuppVersity  article discussing a study that points to the use of carnitine outside of dieting scenarios. In 2013, for example, I wrote about a study by Keller et al. (2013). A study that found significant increases in pro-anabolic hormones and proteins, and a 7% improvement in lean-to-total-mass ratio in rodents in response to a relatively low amount of carnitine in the diet. You can learn more about carnitine at the SuppVersity ! Carnitine for Acute Endurance Pe...
