BFR Preconditioning Not Better Than Placebo? Long Rest Periods For Sustained Testosterone Increase? Train One Leg, Grow Both? - Resistance Training Update October '14

Image
Single-legged leg presses that make both legs stronger are only one of many topics, today. Time for an update on the latest resistance training research - just the interesting stuff, obviously ;-) What exactly? Well, let's see: We'll take a look at how long rest periods sustain the exercise induced. Then, we'll dive right into a placebo -controlled study on blood flow restriction as a means of preconditioning before resistance training, only to top things off with a study that found that training your dominant leg will also increase the leg press strength of the untrained, non-dominant limb. Ah, and since there was some space left in the bottom line, we will acknowledge that AM vs. PM training have identical effects on power, force and hormonal response in young men and pretend to be surprised that a three-set upper-body workout is much more energetically demanding than its one-set analog. All in all, a very balanced update on the latest resistance training research, ...

Concomitant Training: What's the Best Strength to "Cardio" Ratio to Become Big, Buffed and Strong? 3:1, 1:1 or No Cardio at All? Plus: Looking Back at the Latest Meta Review

What's the best you can do after a brutal leg workout? Cardio! At least if size and not strength is your goal... It is one of those never ending debates: "Cardio!? To do it, or not to do it!? That's the question" - especially for those of us whose main goal is to become big and buffed ... now, you know that my take on this is simple: We are not created as "either or" animals, but have the outstanding ability to make use of both our strength and endurance (just as we can eat both meat and vegetables). If we discard these philosophical considerations and take a more scientific stance towards the topic, the question still remains: Isn't doing cardio going to interfere with your success on the bench and vice versa? I mean you can't be a marathon running, bodybuilding powerlifter, can you? Hmm... no I don't think so, at least you would be pretty bad in each of the sports - a typical Jack of All Traits , Master of None , so to say ;-) The ...

Exercise Research Quickie: HIIT vs. Steady State, More on the Hormonal Response. Light Training, High TUTs & Peak Contractions - Not Just for The Elderly. Train Your Left, Grow Your Right Leg - Contralateral Training Effects

The role of the innervations between our muscles as well as to our brain is often overlooked, when we are talking about size gains. The image shows stained nerve fascicles from the Song study, which brings this wiring back onto the radar. I know that we have had the short news on Saturday only and that there are of course tons of short news on Facebook everyday, but the studies I am going to present you in this exercise research quickie were so in-between (meaning not really worth a full post, but still way too good to be wasted on facebook) that I decided to devote a post of its own to the research on the hormonal effects of interval vs. steady state training by Hackney et al. (Hackney. 2012b), the impressive and certainly not totally irrelevant effects of slow movement, low-intensity resistance training in the elderly Watanabe et al. describe in their latest paper and the surprising muscle building (Watanabe. 2013) and growth priming carry over effects Song et al. observed in ...
