Fat and Impotent Due to Tributyltin? Not Adipogenetic or Estrogenic, But Adipogenic and Estrogenic. Organotin TBT Dose-Dependently Increases Fat Deposition and Estrogen Receptor Activity.

Image
Image 1: Chemical structure of tributyltin; the organotin is a common ingredient in pesticides, anti-fungals and marine paints Although large parts of the industry won't concede to it, many of the invisible pollutants of our "post-industrial" age are just as, or even more dangerous than the nasty air and water pollutants of the Industrial Revolution. One of these invisible killers is the organotin, tributyltin (TBT) . It has been long established that TBT exposure during fetal life promotes adipogenesis and predispositions to a multitude of health problems in later life ( Grün and Blumberg, 2006 ) . Other than in other environmental toxins, such as Bisphenol A, it has been established only very recently that TBT may act as an estrogen receptor agonist, as well - in fact, in previous (low-dose) studies ( Lissimachou. 2006 ; Mortensen. 2007 ; Zhang. 2009 ) the exact opposite appeared to be the case. ...

Ask Dr. Andro: What Are Human Equivalent Doses (HED) and How Do I Calculate Them?

Image
Image 1: Rat & guinea pig. Both very popular animal models. Both about the same size and weight, but with very different reactions to identical treatments. I won't waste too many words on this being a new series on the SuppVersity , I suppose the name "Ask Dr. Andro" is self-explanatory. It is based on questions posted in the comment section that are relevant for the majority of the visitors and require and deserve a more sophisticated response. So, if you want your question answered, learn a lesson from "Learner" who posted the following question in the comment section of " Spicing Up Fat Loss: Structural Similarity to Melanocortin-4 Agonists Powers Piperine's (Black Pepper Extract) Fat Loss and Lipid Lowering Effects ". Question from "Learner" : Why is the mg/kg dosing ratio different for humans than rats, and does that vary by the agent? Answer from Dr. Andro : Most of what we know about the effects of (new) drugs, ...

You Don't Want to Gain Muscle? Then You'd Better Avoid Animal Protein. Additional(!) 200g of Pork a Day Build Lean Mass and Improve Blood Lipids and Glucose Levels.

Image
Image 1: I don't know about the barbecue sauce, but without it, this lean pork fillet would be a healthy muscle builder (image by Wikipedian Kbh3rd ) " Meat is unhealthy! ", " Muscle is unaesthetic !" and " I don't want to look like a man! ",  if you recognize your own line of thinking in these statements, you probably are a women and certainly not a regular visitor of the SuppVersity. In that case, it is even more important for you to go on reading about the impressive results an investigation ( Petzke. 2011 ) into the purported negative effects increased meat consumption may have on previously healthy young women. Klaus J. Petzke and his collegues from the  German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbruecke, Germany, recruited fourteen female subjects among the students of the Intitute of National Sciences in Potsdam and randomized them to one of two groups: Group 1, the meat-eaters (...

Bodybuilding for Pekin Ducks: L-Arginine Supplementation Gets Poultry Stage Ready. More Muscle, Less Fat.

Image
Image 1: Not your usual exercise and nutrition science magazine: The Journal of British Poultry Science ( Taylor Francis Group . 2011) Those of you who have followed the Amino Acids for Super Human Series on Carl Lenore's Super Human Radio will be familiar with the manifold benefits supplementation with the conditionally essential amino acid l-arginine has on blood pressure, glucose metabolism, endothelial health, etc. If you also listened to the last installment of the series ( Amino Acids for Super Humans III: The Sulfur Amino Acids ), you will know about my special affiliation with chicken, with chicken. Taken together, this may in parts explain, why today's SuppVersity newsitem is about a study from the Chinese Hubei Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science in Wuhan ( Wu. 2011 ). In their study that has been published in the latest issue of the "famous" Journal of British Poultry Science (...

Androstenedione, Grand Daddy of All Prohormones: Carcinogenic Poison or Non-Toxic Muscle Builder?

Image
I suspect you have already read statements like " prohormones will kill your liver ", "prohormones will give you gyno" and/or " prohormones will induce prostate cancer ", haven't you? Well, Androstenedione is not methylated, so bro-science would tell you that your liver won't take a beating. Yet, all gynecomastia issues aside, what if its not the methyl-group but the prohormone itself that is liver toxic or carcinogenic? A recent study published in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology on May 30 2011 ( Blystone. 2011 ) sheds some light onto potential side effects of the "grand daddy of all prohormones". Chard R. Blystone and his colleagues administered  "subchronic" doses of androstenedione @ 10, 20, or 50 mg/kg body weight to male and @ 2, 10, or 50 female mice. And they did that for two years . Figure 1: Cancer risk of male F344/N rats after 2 years of chronic exposure t...

Spicing Up Fat Loss: Structural Similarity to Melanocortin-4 Agonists Powers Piperine's (Black Pepper Extract) Fat Loss and Lipid Lowering Effects

Image
Image 1: The molecular structure of piperine makes it a potential melanocortin-4 (MC4) agonist. Despite the fact that the American fast food mentality has long conquered the Indian subcontinent, and obesity and diabetes are on a rise, the ideal of the curry eating, spicy food loving, lean Indian still figures in the minds of people in the "old" (Europe) and "new" world (America). Maybe this is part of the reason  why many of us willingly believe(d) in the ability of black pepper and other spice extract to literally "burn away" unwanted body fat, when we read about it in the latest supplement advertisement. Other than in the cases of Goji berries, Acai and co, a recent study ( Shah. 2011 ) coming from, you guessed it, India, was not only able to confirm the validity of these claims (at least for rodents / more on that later), it also gives a reasonable explanation for the fat-burning effect of piper nigrum . ...
